I think the wood you speak of is at extremely great depths and sometimes protected by the mud at the bottom.
See #45. Just do a Google search on Salvaged Great Lakes Wood, and you will find several sources. Apparently much of the North Woods forest lies at the bottom of one of the Lakes. The water is VERY cold, and the wood is just lying there like a gold mine, waiting to be recovered.
