Whatever Newt may have said in the past, he appears absolutely determined to make a transformative change for smaller government, defund Planned Parenthood, rein in the out-of-control federal judiciary, repeal Obamacare, lower taxes, end government religious bigotry, serve notice on sanctuary cities and project American power. I think Newt will do it if he wins the presidency. Whether he will win would depend on the turn of the economy in the next several months barring no October surprise. Usually, Vice-President nominees don’t really matter but it will be hugely important in Newt’s case because he does carry some weighty baggage that will be up against Obama’s $1B hit, mud, and sludge machine. Choosing West or Rubio would be a big boost to his prospects. CNN’s internal polling shows Newt trailing with a 4-point gap between female and male voters and despite a 12-point lead over Romney he garners a 6-point lead with independents. A well managed campaign is capable of overcoming this deficit in the general. Newt can do this. His victory speech in SC was gracious and hit the right tones.
