The winner of the South Carolina primary has gone on to be the Republican presidential nominee for 30 straight years and that could be bad news for Mitt Romney, who suddenly finds himself in a real battle with Newt Gingrich in Saturday's vote.
Polls suggest support for the former House speaker has surged since his fiery performance in Thursday night's candidates' debate, giving him a slight lead over the former Massachusetts governor and a good chance of grabbing all 25 of the states delegates.
The two other candidates former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum and Texas congressman Ron Paul appear to have stalled in the polls and are not expected to have much of a showing
On Friday, the Romney camp was downplaying talk of victory, instead emphasizing that their candidate has performed beyond expectations in the conservative state where he finished a distant fourth four years ago. Nevertheless, a loss would come as a blow to Romney, who seemed to have great momentum following his victory in the New Hampshire primary.

Food for thought:
Romney loses Iowa to a competitor who only the week before trailed by double digits. Now, in with South Carolina the same is happening, or at the very least a double-digit, way beyond 10 point lead has turned into a statistical dead heat.
In light of these two primary performances, it shows two things; Romney has never shown he can get above about 25-30% anywhere besides home base (this allows a lead competitor to easily overcome these double digit poll margins in such a short time) and more importantly, it shows his vulnerability in the general election. He won’t win that. He just won’t.
I’ve heard that the Republican Establishment is beginning to figure out that Romney might not be all that they’ve wanted. That’s not necessarily be a positive thing, because maybe the reaction will be to come out with even stringer attacks against Gingrich and Santorum. We’ll see.
Why do I keep hearing the "Team America:World Police" "America!" theme song in my head?
Go kick some socialist @ss, NEWT!
I’m starting to think we need a brokered convention. If Gingrich is the nominee it wouldn’t surprise me if Hillary makes her entrance. I think they have enough dirt on Obama to make him bow out and he dropped his hint early enough about being a one term president. Then it would be Hillary VS Gingrich. Guess who wins then Hillary would have the womens vote locked up. Actually my fantasy match up would be Hillary VS Palin. This is getting interesting. Meanwhile the fate of our nation is at stake.
"Please Mitt..."
"You've failed me for the last time, Ann..."
It's the least we can expect from a party that suppressed Rick Santorum's win in Iowa until it would have no impact in salvaging his campaign.
My 22 year old son who does not do drugs, who was raised in a conservative home, was homeschooled all of his life, and is an extremely successful college grad making a six figure income, is supporting him. It’s been very stressful around here because RP is the only thing he thinks about and talks about lately. My husband’s theory is that once he started making the big bucks and saw so much of it go to the government, he latched on to RP who said he’d eliminate the income tax.
Newt will eat Paul for a snack when it comes to a real head on debate. I just hope that Newt makes better decisions for this country (and I think he will) than he has in his selection of wives!
I speak from experience as it took me three tries to find the right one. LOL... Expensive mistakes!
Newt supported HC mandates and global warming. How is he a better conservative than Santorum?
No personal offense to your son, but anyone that thinks Nutball Paul could eliminate the Federal income tax is living in bizaro world.
Fox IS in real decline...they have signed up with the Romney team...I am watching them less and less.
Began to sour on O’Reilly too...when he claimed in response to an email at the end of his show that Obama got his Connecticut social security number in 1977 WHILE VISITING HIS FATHER AT HARVARD...except that Havard is in Tassachusetts.
Even O’Reilly is covering for The One.
What year did Zero Sr. die?
Special thanks to ABC News for dealing off the bottom of the deck, getting caught, and helping Mr. Newt. They must be in great pain today.
A lot of Libertarians, and if he would have ever run with an (L) behind his name, he would never have been elected. He is NUTS, and mittens needs to run as 0 bummer's VP candidate.
I got my choice down to Santorum and Gingrich. The Santorum pro-family initiative is very critical to restoring this country. To achieve their goals, the Democrats have, over the years, placed much emphasis on destroying the traditional family. Our nation is suffering mightily from what they have done. Fixing the family resolves many of our economic and fiscal problems.
However, propaganda and activism of the press is likely a key to turning this country around. The power of brainwashing and filling the heads of people with lies is time-tested. For all his warts, I think Newt may have the unique ability to expose to the public the depth of evil in the alliance between the MSM and the leftist Democratic Party. And that is why I decided earlier this week to support Newt.
If Romney went heads up against Newt, and of course lost, the media would declare that he came in second, while Newt came in second to last.
The answer is yes and with great passion! That’s how California got “The Imitator” prior to “Moonbeam!”
