RIP January 25, 1938 - January 20, 2012

Etta James (born Jamesetta Hawkins; January 25, 1938 – January 20, 2012) was an American singer whose style spanned a variety of music genres including blues, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, soul, gospel and jazz. Starting her career in the mid 1950s, she gained fame with hits such as "Dance With Me, Henry", "At Last", "Tell Mama", and "I'd Rather Go Blind" for which she claimed she wrote the lyrics. She faced a number of personal problems including drug addiction before making a musical resurgence in the late 1980s with the album, The Seven Year Itch.

She is regarded as having bridged the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and roll, and is the winner of six Grammys and 17 Blues Music Awards. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001, and the Grammy Hall of Fame in both 1999 and 2008. Rolling Stone ranked James number 22 on their list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and number 62 on the list of the 100 Greatest Artists.

A number of pianists recorded the Rhapsody with Fiedler, so I’m not sure which one is present on this recording.

Jack Jones, one of the better saloon singers of his era, took a Hal David and Burt Bacharach tune and got his first hit out of it. Hal’s lyrics look ahead to “Wishing and Hoping” a year later. Like “Liberty Valance” this was an exploitation song and was not part of the movie of the same name.

It was now time for Dionne Warwick to ring the cash register with a Hal David and Burt Bacharach tune. She would now become the greatest exponent of their music. Note that this time the guys don’t work between the bar lines but actually change time signature by inserting 9/8 bars between 6/8 bars.

When I think of Dionne Warwick I think of Burt Bacharach and vice-versa. :)

It was awards time for Dionne Warwick. This tune from Hal David and Burt Bacarach won the Grammy for best R&B single for 1964. This tune is written to make the most effective use of Dionne’s truly fine instrument. What a set of pipes! Note that wonderful string interlude in the middle and the decrescendo into her vocal line.

Here is Hal David’s recollection.

Burt was the musician and the arranger – in addition to being a marvelous composer, he’s a very good arranger. So, I think that when it came to things musical, I would defer to him more often than not. But in terms of basic feelings about the production, my feelings would get expressed and very often would be the direction we’d go.
