Afghanistan’s Soldiers Step Up Killings of Allied Forces
New York Times ^ | January 20, 2012 | MATTHEW ROSENBERG

KABUL, Afghanistan — American and other coalition forces here are being killed in increasing numbers by the very Afghan soldiers they fight alongside and train, in attacks motivated by deep-seated animosity between the supposedly allied forces, according to American and Afghan officers and a classified coalition report.

A decade into the war in Afghanistan, the report makes clear that these killings have become the most visible symptom of a far deeper ailment plaguing the war effort: the contempt each side holds for the other, never mind the Taliban. The ill will and mistrust run deep among civilians and militaries on both sides, raising questions about what future role the United States and its allies can expect to play in Afghanistan.

Underscoring the danger, a gunman in an Afghan Army uniform killed four French service members and wounded several others on Friday, according to an Afghan police official in Kapisa Province in eastern Afghanistan, prompting the French president to suspend his country’s operations here.

The violence, and the failure by coalition commanders to address it, casts a harsh spotlight on the shortcomings of American efforts to build a functional Afghan Army, a pillar of the Obama administration’s strategy for extricating the United States from the war in Afghanistan, said the officers and experts who helped shape the strategy.

The problems risk leaving the United States and its allies dependent on an Afghan force that is permeated by anti-Western sentiment and incapable of combating the Taliban and other militants when NATO’s combat mission ends in 2014, they said.

One instance of the general level of antipathy in the war exploded into uncomfortable view last week when video emerged of American Marines urinating on dead Taliban fighters. Although American commanders quickly took action and condemned the act

Don't pretend you can invade Muslim countries and make the people there your friends.

When you’re wounded and left on Afghanistan’s plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An’ go to your Gawd like a soldier.
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
So-oldier ~of~ the Queen!

The French are considering withdrawal now.

Surrender monkeys or finally getting a clue?

Obama’s policies encourage this. He wants to negotiate with the Taliban so there are no consequences to murdering troops.

C’mon man. If troops weren’t there, they wouldn’t be getting killed. AQ is finished. Taliban is mission creep.

I have turned against both the wars in Afghanistan and in Iraq.

Well, not the wars per se, but the nation building efforts.

“If you break it you own it”, Powell said.

Liberal tosh that is.

Especially for Europe... Sharia is taking hold in our suburbs without opposition, whilst our soldiers are coming home in coffins from Afghanistan.

Who knows? Nation building could perhaps work if we really tried and stayed for a few generations, but America, nor Europe can afford that.

As for the Taliban taking over? Pakistan falling and jihadees getting nukes?

It is not a matter of if anyhow, it is a matter of when. THe nuke genie is out of the bottle.

We live in “interesting times”

Disclaimer: I was a major neo-con back then as my posting history shows. Bush’s freedom agenda... Bringing freedom to the oppressed muslims...

Funnily I think the arab spring is our best best hope, contrary to
most FReepers. Let the muslim brotherhood rule, let them take power. The people, in their endless stupidity, believes that sharia will bring them jobs and bread on the table.

Perhaps the best way to civilize these people is to let them them learn on their own. After enough death and starvation under “perfect” islamic leadership, they might get a clue.

Cheers.

I am tending to believe that. America is free because we wanted to be free — there was critical mass in wanting freedom from England so we fought. The afghans weren't ready for it. Their idea of “freedom” is to enslave everyone in a theocracy. Ironically, the only revolution that our a-hole-in-chief did not support, Iran, was the best hope for freedom in that region. I am not sure about Syria because I believe that is more islamic brotherhood theocracy creep.

Just muslims doing jihad.

After 1,400 years of nonstop war against the world, you would think we would figure it out.

The people in those countries have a medieval mindset. Imagine if there were an enlightened nation that “freed” Europe in the 10th century from their oppressive kings. What would those freed people do? Very much what these modern day medieval people are doing now. Enslave everyone in a theocracy, burn witches, kill nonbelievers, etc. Best thing we could do is seal the borders and let them kill each other until they happen upon the idea that being a slave to a violent theocracy is not the answer.

We didn’t learn from the Brits and we didn’t learn from the Ruskies. You can’t win a war in Afghanistan. Too many mountains, too many caves where the insurgents can hide out, and you can’t bomb them back to the 13th century...they’re already living in the 13th century.

Part of this quarantine must include a halt to immigration by muslims (trojan horses) to the West.

I agree. Iran should have been the counry, if any, not iraq.

They have lived under an islamic theocracy and know it sucks, despite oil wealth.

Saddam for all his faults was an arab fascists without much appeal outside the Palestinian territories after the Soviet Union fell he lost his sponsor as well.

I guess all of us have had a lot of geo-political education since 911.

Syria too, if it falls, will go to the brotherhood.

The interesting thing is that they absolutely hate Hezbollah though.

So a new brotherhood controlled middle east would most likely be vehemently against shias, Iran and Hezbollah.

Who knows how it will play out, but I see now real hope for the middle east for many, many decades.

But, having them all go into islamic thecracy mode is paradoxically our best hope. Let them get a practical lesson in that you cannot run a modern society by the rules of the quran.

But, in the meantime we are in for a rocky ride, and even Europe’s very survival is at stake.

You are in a much better position. Whilst we might go under, you might turn into us as we are now. So you have more time to work out the solution.

I agree of course.

The labour party in the 70s instituted a total immigration stop in Norway. But, of course it was full of holes, but the dam did not really break until the late 80s when UN and EU rules on family reunion, UN quota refugees were put into place.

At that time I think it almost became policy of the labour party to import a new proletariat. The relatively liberal The Economist have suggested as much, as have reports from England.

A Pakistani woman involved in our conservative party warned that increased immigration was stifling freedom and bringing with it the fundamentalism she had tried to escape. When she came in the 70s she learned Norwegian, hanged out with her Norwegian neighbours, but as the Pakistani community grew she was threatened. Hijabs started to appear, now evolving into niqabs.

After protesting this and complaining about threats to her life, she was found dead being ran over by a train just outside of Oslo.

Another girl - there was a debate about her on Norwegian state TV- last night was raped and beaten after leaving islam and of course receiving death threats.

Yeah, we cannot cope, so stop all immigration from islamic countries

And, nuconvert that includes Iranians and others claiming to be gay.

You have surely heard about the muslim rape wave on Oslo?

One of the worst perps was an islamic immigrant who got asylum because he was “gay”

You cannot ever ever give blanket asylum rights because of claiming to be gay. Here I hopefully I have Santorum with me :)

Cheers.

Maybe they’re going to nuke it from orbit.

I doubt that anyone would miss the place.
