Thursday may have been one of the most eventful days of the Republican campaign so far, but the state of the race in South Carolina didn't change much. Newt Gingrich continues to lead Mitt Romney by 6 points, 35-29, with Ron Paul and Rick Santorum each tied for third at 15%.
Revelations from the Marianne Gingrich interview haven't taken a toll on Newt's image yet. For the first time in our South Carolina tracking this month his favorability is better than Romney's, with 53% of voters holding a positive opinion of him compared to 51% for his chief competitor.
Gingrich's lead with evangelicals held steady today at 40-22 over Romney. He's also doing well with Tea Party voters (46-21), registered Republicans (38-30), voters describing themselves as very conservative (41-21), men (39-27), and voters in the Upstate (36-25).
Romney is leading with non-evangelicals (39-30), independents (30-26), moderates (44-23), and women (32-31). The problem for him is that all of those groups are a minority within the South Carolina Republican electorate.

Doesn't matter....we are looking for someone that will REMOVE Obama,,,..
I don't think Romney can either....
>> Whom will it be that he endorses when he goes? If he clings to his establishment habits, it will be Romney.
It wouldn’t surprise me, but such an endorsement would trivialize his vaunted Pro-Life rhetoric.
The question is...who would Newt pick as his VP? Would he bring on Santorum? No way he would team up with Mitt...there is too much bad blood...they can’t stand each other. Ron Paul is a no way although Newt could grab a ton of votes by picking up the Paulie’s who would turn to Obama or stay home.
Cain is a no go. Michelle is needed in congress. Perry won’t do it...not with 2 years in Texas left as Governor.
My guess for Newt would be Rubio.
Can Rubio play attack dog?
Starting with Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh to CNN and ABC, they have been doing a stellar job of creating the backlash.

Playing to a friendly conservative audience is a far cry from resonating with millions of people who are not ideologues of the Right. Obama will sweep to a huge victory if Newt is our nominee.
“The question is...who would Newt pick as his VP? Would he bring on Santorum? No way he would team up with Mitt...there is too much bad blood...”
Sanitorium crossed the line with his “Newt is crazy” BS, that shipped has passed.
Gingrich/Perry
“Paul is against Abortion like Rick, but is NOT for Federal control of it, he believes it is a state issue and votes that way.”
Paul wrote
“To summarize my views - I believe the federal government has a role to play. I believe Roe v. Wade should be repealed. I believe federal law should declare that life begins at conception.”
I agree with that too. :)
“Its getting sad around here for the shifting standards, the unspoken rule against discussing ALL the candidates openly, the juvenile hero-worship based on a shared religion (forget that that candidate may have done things we found unforgivable when some democrat did them) or cult of personality baloney.”
I remember when it was heretical to say anything against Sarah Palin, the future nominee who would lead us all to victory!
“Playing to a friendly conservative audience is a far cry from resonating with millions of people who are not ideologues of the Right. Obama will sweep to a huge victory if Newt is our nominee.”
And it’s not as if Newt is an ideologue of the Right. He’s like McCain, same kind of baggage, same erratic tendencies, but he’s a better debater so he’s the one.
“Newt Gingrich? He’s at 28 percent favorable to 58 percent unfavorable in one poll, 27 percent to 56 percent in the otheraveraging -29.5 percent. Yes, -29.5 percent.
Newt Gingrich should never be underestimated. Perhaps he could even recover from a -29.5 percent unfavorability rating. But its quite a stretch for Gingrich to claim that he has an obviously better chance to win than Rick Santorum, either against Mitt Romney or Barack Obama.”

Newt is in no position to tell others to get out.
And I’m someone who has said lately Rick, Rick and Newt, but this has turned me off to Newt somewhat.
FYI on Ron Paul:
“Voted NO on restricting interstate transport of minors to get abortions. (Apr 2005)
Voted NO on making it a crime to harm a fetus during another crime. (Feb 2004)
Rated 56% by the NRLC, indicating a mixed record on abortion. (Dec 2006)”

Why is Ron Paul against a parent deciding what’s right for their minor child?
Open primary?! What is the matter with the Republican Party?! Never mind, no reply is necessary.
So many havey-cavey “primaries” before a true, closed primary even has a chance. After this election, I think I’ll remove my name from the Republican rolls. Either there’s a political party out there that is smart enough to have closed primaries with randomly selected dates every cycle, or I’ll join independents and negate a liberal’s vote in that group.
I’m not for Ron Paul. But even super libertarian Ron Paul doesn’t believe that the federal government should have no say on this issue, that some states should be able to legalize it, which would be the case if he ONLY called for repealing Roe.
He also voted for the Federal partial abortion ban in 2003. While he wasn’t crazy about the fact that it contradicted his ideology, the bottom line was it would save lives and he had to vote for it.
I agree.
Republicans haven’t had an excuse to get excited about a Presidential debate since Reagan.
Obama must be nervous, he had his hope and change nonsense to hide his incompetence the first time around, not to mention a poor opponent. But this time, his record and his ideology will be on the line. Even with what anyone would consider a tough situation (easy to forget there was a very personal and likely hurful element to what his ex wife has done) he managed to put in an excellent and memorable performance. It bodes well.
Long way ahead though, Newt needs to take it hurdle by hurdle.
While I’m well aware of Ron Paul’s pro-life votes, his LIBertarianism clouds his mind, which is why he only received a rating of 56% by the National Right-to-Life Committee.
The left wing communist atheist media think they know a lot about Christianity. I guess they missed the part about forgiveness. I have a feeling the evangelicals are practicing what they preach.
I have a friend who, if you ask him if he’s a Christian, will say “I am forgiven.”
A group called ‘winning our future’ is running some absolutely scathing radio ads against Romney here in Michigan. They’re also running pro Newt ads.
Paragraph breaks are your friend, FRiend.
