Thursday may have been one of the most eventful days of the Republican campaign so far, but the state of the race in South Carolina didn't change much. Newt Gingrich continues to lead Mitt Romney by 6 points, 35-29, with Ron Paul and Rick Santorum each tied for third at 15%.
Revelations from the Marianne Gingrich interview haven't taken a toll on Newt's image yet. For the first time in our South Carolina tracking this month his favorability is better than Romney's, with 53% of voters holding a positive opinion of him compared to 51% for his chief competitor.
Gingrich's lead with evangelicals held steady today at 40-22 over Romney. He's also doing well with Tea Party voters (46-21), registered Republicans (38-30), voters describing themselves as very conservative (41-21), men (39-27), and voters in the Upstate (36-25).
Romney is leading with non-evangelicals (39-30), independents (30-26), moderates (44-23), and women (32-31). The problem for him is that all of those groups are a minority within the South Carolina Republican electorate.

After tonight's EPIC BITCHSLAP, and the Santorum meltdown, I think this could be a done deal now.
Please keep in mind, as always, that PPP is a DEMOCRAT POLLSTER, so this has to really be hurting them.

Newt is always entertaining and I have not made up my mind yet but I really like Santorum.
I remember watching a debate from his senate seat loss and knew he won hands down but the press was relentless so he was swept up like many others that year.
I live in SC and am leaning toward him.
Haven't fell yet but leaning...

Awesome. I was hoping to folks saw this Ex-wife for what it was - a media hit piece designed for one purpose - and that was to take out a candidate that was becoming a threat to Mitt Romney.
I hope there is a backlash...

I’m a Newt supporter, but I’ve admired Santorum since the 2006 Senate race which he lost, when he gave a series of speeches on the danger of radical Islam, which was not the best political move, but was courageous & principled.

Newt’s answer to the first question in the debate just locked up SC for him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes up another 10 pts overnight.

Santorum’s my way or the highway personna is a bit frightening. sort of like a kid who pouts when he doesn’t get his way. He just doesn’t have the depth of Newt Gingerich.

They didn’t include how much Romney is leading with registered Demonrats who will be voting in droves in SC’s open primary. Don’t get complacent.

True. However, overall, they are pretty good with their predictions. They called the Scott Brown-Marcia Coakley race accurately; Rassmussen refused to make a pick. That one always sticks out to me.

One problem is that Santorum’s repeated attacks on Gingrich just reinforces the meme that Gingrich is the singular non-Romney, who Santorum is trying desperately to dethrone. South Carolina voters know that conservatives must consolidate behind one conservative alternative, and with Santorum broadcasting that Newt is the strong horse, that just makes it more likely conservative voters will back Newt this Saturday.
