Thursday may have been one of the most eventful days of the Republican campaign so far, but the state of the race in South Carolina didn't change much. Newt Gingrich continues to lead Mitt Romney by 6 points, 35-29, with Ron Paul and Rick Santorum each tied for third at 15%.
Revelations from the Marianne Gingrich interview haven't taken a toll on Newt's image yet. For the first time in our South Carolina tracking this month his favorability is better than Romney's, with 53% of voters holding a positive opinion of him compared to 51% for his chief competitor.
Gingrich's lead with evangelicals held steady today at 40-22 over Romney. He's also doing well with Tea Party voters (46-21), registered Republicans (38-30), voters describing themselves as very conservative (41-21), men (39-27), and voters in the Upstate (36-25).
Romney is leading with non-evangelicals (39-30), independents (30-26), moderates (44-23), and women (32-31). The problem for him is that all of those groups are a minority within the South Carolina Republican electorate.

“Ive admired Santorum since the 2006 Senate race which he lost, when he gave a series of speeches on the danger of radical Islam, which was not the best political move, but was courageous & principled.”
Santorum really gets it on radical Islam, and has always been principled:
“In the House of Representatives, Santorum played a key role in exposing the House Banking Scandal. That scandal cost incumbent Republicans reelection, but Santorum was rock-solid on integrity. Santorum is, in short, just what we want: a conservative who puts principles above power.”

Nice graphics! Go Newt go!
On primary day, I’ll be voting for Newt. Although I don’t think it’s a done deal, I bet he has a better chance to defeat Romney here in the Palmetto State, than Huckabee did McCain in 2008. This year, Gingrich is the only Southern candidate in the race, unlike in 2008, when Fred Thompson, a Tennesseean, split the Southern vote with Huck. Ron Paul may hail from Texas, but his libertarianism has little appeal in the South, which cottons to traditional conservatism and especially dislikes the idea of cutting the military (lot of military bases down here, big part of the economy). Santorum, meanwhile, is openly hostile to states’ rights, and that doesn’t play here, either.
>> I wonder how many points Santorum loses tonight?
Hopefully enough to motivate that Statist to quit the race.
No it isn't! The bottom line is who can beat Obama. In my opinion, none of our candidates can. Why?
Romney has never been able to sell himself to conservatives.
Conservatives are in the process of talking themselves into settling for someone they wouldn't have even remotely dreamed of voting for only a short while ago.
The idea that Newt Gingrich could rally sufficient numbers of "Reagan Democrats," independents, and moderate Republicans to form a winning national coalition is laughable.
Unless something truly otherworldly happens in November, we will lose this election, Obama will get his 2nd term, and conservatives will have learned nothing, as usual.
I can’t figure it out, either. I guess Romney’s dog is appropriate character information, but Newt’s treatment of his wives? None of our business.
I recall a time when conservatives were about the nuclear family, living one’s beliefs and not just attacking others for not having high moral standards, and the evil of divorce. I guess now that it’s one of ‘ours’ all of that goes overboard.
But I could have sworn we hated Romney because of Romneycare.
...the most exciting development of the past few weeks is what has been happening up in Massachusetts. The health bill that Governor Romney signed into law this month has tremendous potential to effect major change in the American health system....” [Gingrich and his colleagues] agree entirely with Governor Romney and Massachusetts legislators that our goal should be 100% insurance coverage for all Americans. He strongly endorses the individual mandate: The individual mandate requires those who earn enough to afford insurance to purchase coverage, and subsidies will be made available to those individuals who cannot afford insurance on their own. We agree strongly with this principle.
This is trolling, I guess. Sorry to get into the facts, and the character, of this New Age blowhard who is for big government intervention in our lives.

When Newt wins by double digits in Florida and Virginia his campaign stash will come rolling in!
Go Newt!

Telling the truth will get you banned from this site. At least that’s what I was told earlier this evening. I really don’t see much difference between Romney and Gingrich except that Romney doesn’t support amnesty, and Romney actually has won statewide election at some point in his life. To paraphrase another great Virginian: ‘I know not what course others may take, but as for me, I’ll be voting for the conservative candidate - fellow Virginian, Rick Santorum.’
After the debate the other night, and the standing ovation for Newt - people remarked they had never seen a standing ovation at a presidential primary debate.
Indeed, Frank Luntz said he had never seen one in the 16 years he's been covering them.
Tonight, we saw two more.
I think he could 'rally' the whole county.
If he chooses the man he mentioned last spring for his running mate - the county will be electrified...
Newt Gingrich/Col. Allen West would set the country on fire.
Marianne was an “other woman” too herself in the beginning.
Mark Levin and the guy who runs Insider Advantage who worked for Newt at that time both hinted that they know stuff about Marianne that they’d rather not say but that would be hard on her.
I think many people know what time it is with Marianne even though Newt as he has acknowledged was no saint.
I don’t think his daughters would go front and center for him if were an ogre....mine sure would not for me.
I see this actually helping Newt with his base...and he will defend himself unlike McCain who refused to fight back and spayed Palin.
the Big Mo is with Newt in SC...not much time for this to do much and his debate smack down will play well with such a malleable electorate as the US is
it seems to me that the media is terrified of Newt
Exactly right as far as I am concerned.
Any of thise four would be better than Obama....yes even Ron Paul...
” Hopefully enough to motivate that Statist to quit the race.” <<
Rick “Bachmann” said tonight on GRETA, in an answer to her inquiry about when he will cough up his own tax returns, that he didn’t really know, because he PLANNED TO TAKE THE WHOLE FAMILY TO FLORIDA.
Now, a plan is not a determination, or a promise, but I may have been wrong in saying he will be out by Monday. He may come in behind Ron Paul, since they are said to be tied for third. If so, that would mean, LAST. Rick certainly can not afford a meaningful campaign required for Florida, so the writing is on the wall. Whom will it be that he endorses when he goes? If he clings to his establishment habits, it will be Romney.
Exactly right!
It Is NOT who is most gentle,...or manages best...
IT is about saving the country.
And doing something about activist judges...I like Newt on that one!
Very astute observation! Newt is speaking Truth to power and it makes whining all the more identifiable. Did you see how his brain formulated that "elite media protecting Obama" moment? You could almost see him formulating the thought as the secondary question was asked! People see that, even if they can't quite put their finger on what it is. He pulls so quickly from his foundational knowledge base. Let's face it, he intellectually humiliated 2 major media "representatives" in about 4 days. Can you imagine a Presidency of this kind of intellectual engagement? Journalists might have to actually "think" before they asked questions!
That is not a character statement about him....
We have to have someone that can verbally dism, ember the Obama Media and thir arguments....
Romney is in the 1 % and the Obama machine is getting set up to take him down....
ping
Damn true....about the wallet.
It’s getting sad around here for the shifting standards, the unspoken rule against discussing ALL the candidates openly, the juvenile hero-worship based on a shared religion (forget that that candidate may have done things we found unforgivable when some democrat did them) or cult of personality baloney.
I rarely post here. It’s becoming a place where the only acceptable response is ‘I agree wholeheartedly with the prevailing opinion.’ Not what I’d call “free”.
Meant to type “I rarely post here NOW”—I’ve posted thousands of times and stomped off mad probably a dozen, but always came back. It was never like this, though.
