Gingrich Maintains 6 Point Lead (In S.C. Released FIVE Minutes Ago!)
PPP ^ | 1-19-12 | Tom Jensen

Posted on 01/19/2012 7:23:39 PM PST by tcrlaf

Thursday may have been one of the most eventful days of the Republican campaign so far, but the state of the race in South Carolina didn't change much. Newt Gingrich continues to lead Mitt Romney by 6 points, 35-29, with Ron Paul and Rick Santorum each tied for third at 15%.

Revelations from the Marianne Gingrich interview haven't taken a toll on Newt's image yet. For the first time in our South Carolina tracking this month his favorability is better than Romney's, with 53% of voters holding a positive opinion of him compared to 51% for his chief competitor.

Gingrich's lead with evangelicals held steady today at 40-22 over Romney. He's also doing well with Tea Party voters (46-21), registered Republicans (38-30), voters describing themselves as very conservative (41-21), men (39-27), and voters in the Upstate (36-25).

Romney is leading with non-evangelicals (39-30), independents (30-26), moderates (44-23), and women (32-31). The problem for him is that all of those groups are a minority within the South Carolina Republican electorate.

“Romney has never been able to sell himself to conservatives.”

He absolutely would if he gets the nomination. The amalgamation of the electorate who will be voting are NOT all as conservative as many would like to believe.

Just because “The idea that Newt Gingrich could rally sufficient numbers of “Reagan Democrats,” independents, and moderate Republicans to form a winning national coalition is laughable.”

Totally agree. And that will seal the win for Obama. The failure to read the American electorate AS IT IS happens over and over. Just because Newt is slapping the media around, does not mean it will translate into votes from the masses of uninformed who don’t even know what media manipulation is. Feels good to us now, but losing in November won’t.

Actually, I find it pretty impressive that Gingrich trails Romney by only 1 with respect to women. That's supposed to be Gingrich's weak area.

But again, I'd like to point out the source. Even if I like the numbers, I don't believe them from PPP. I want to see confirmation from more reputable sources first.

>>However, that doesn’t include the new Rueters/Ipsos poll tonite of 675 LV showing Mitt +12 over Gingrich.

And there is another out this AM where Mitt has a big lead. Polls are all over the place.

I think Newt is the ONE candidate who truly believes that we are fighting not only the progressive Dems, but the progressive media as well. He is the ONLY one who will fight them effectively.

Yes, they’ll have to think before they ask a questions ...they have to THINK, period!

The Media is in a sorry state. And at the moment, its the Enemy of this State. They have forgotten their cherished role as the watchdogs of the First Amendment. I’m hoping Newt is the one that re-educates the media and the dupes in this country on that fact.

I remember watching a debate from his senate seat loss and knew he won hands down but the press was relentless so he was swept up like many others that year.

I live in PA and watched one of the debates as well. He tore Casey up and made him look like a fool (not hard to do). And like you said, the media didn't cover it at all.

The difference is whether the poll includes Rats and Independents. Those votes go to Romney and Paul. The primary is open on Sat, otherwise, I jave no doubt that Newt really is up 6 and would win. Btw, those Rats will vote for Obama in Nov not Romney.

I am a woman and I am voting for Newt. The marital stuff doesn’t faze me a bit. We need a fight in the White House! Newt is fearless!

Obama hates me and wants to take away my way of life. Despite his best efforts, I still have a job and I still go to church and I still own a gun and well, I’ll always be White. Obama wants to destroy me and My America and if you are anything like me, he wants to destroy you too! Americans need to wake up to the evil he represents. Obama wants to bring a gun to a knife fight to kill me! Obama wants to get in my face! Obama wants more of the money I work for and he wants his TSA to feel me up more at the airports and he wants me to shut up about it. He wants that for all those who do not fall behind him lockstep

I won’t go!!!!

I didn’t see a Santorum meltdown at all.

Newt did very well. I wish he’d shut up between debates.
Romney was evasive. Not releasing tax info will hurt him.
Santorum was solid. His SOPA response was reasonable but poorly received.
Paul rambled on in some answers, was solid on others. Might have lost points on his abortion response.

Rubio has already said he’s not interested in the VP slot...

This man is open to it - and the country would be electrified with Newt and this man on the campaign trail - especially in debates with obama and biden.

I agree, Rick will not be able to go up against Obama and his billion Dollar Bulldozer. That is just a fact.

Although Rick has some good qualities and some good answers, that is not enough to take down Obama.

Rick simply does not have the IT factor, in these debates he has that whining, "I'm gonna tell the teacher on you look", the constant shaking of the head & facial expressions while someone else is speaking, is very disrespectful. Obama will clobber him, as Obama is just more obnoxious.

Rick, unlike the others, had a hard time Trying to defend a fellow Republican after Jon King attacked Newt on the ExWife issue. Mitt and Paul did the right thing, IGNORE. Rick almost could not bring himself to defend and tried make it about himself as he went on and on, very disturbing attitude.

Although I detest Mitt, he gave the proper answer.

Check out yesterday’s thread on FR: “Rick Santorum: the most uninteresting man in the world”, and all the comments that follow on the thread. Santorum has in fact LESS support than even Ron Paul, who could never get the nomination. It doesn’t really matter whether you or anyone else “likes” him. You would be wasting your vote in any primary by voting for him.
If you think you SHOULD vote for him to make him feel good, that would be your choice, but it’s still a wasted vote, and at this point we can’t afford that-—the process of getting our ONE candidate is in FULL SWING.
Santorum is NOT ready for the ensuing nine months of PrimeTime campaigning that all the candidates are now facing-—he comes up
real short in just about every area, and the ONE area that he is “strongest” in, social conservatism, is the ONLY one
that gets him a voting bloc, but it also happens to be the LEAST important one for tens of millions of American voters.
It’s clear in all these debates that he’s only too eager to fall back into his unyielding social positions like the absurd “NO ABORTION EVEN IN CASES OF RAPE OR INCEST”, which about .0001 percent of American voters would agree with.
Positions like this make Santorum look like another Big Government Demagogue, and people are right to be scared by a position like that because it looks like one big Agenda Item for him, that we’d have to hear about every week in a Santorum Administration. They’d believe he’d be working on it every day, whether he would be or not.
Who the hell is Rick Santorum to tell a woman (or GIRL) brutally raped in an alley or by her drunken uncle that she HAS TO carry a fetus that will remind her of that horrific incident for nine full months, and then be expected to “adjust” to the lifetime committment to raise a child (you can be sure she’d be doing it alone) from a momentary union
that was not her CHOICE, since it was a criminal act perpetrated against her.

Santorum simply has no ideas he’s eager to get out there in the forefront of his presentation-—Gingrich has nothing BUT ideas, and that’s the reason the MSM continues to try to derail him with smears about his marital history.
Gingrich is the ONLY one who can take a stage and expound on ANY subject with any kind of authority-—America is not tired of him, America is just getting to know him. And they’re liking what they’re seeing, and hearing, and the overwhelming majority of the Tea Party vote will go to Gingrich, rather than Romney, Santorum or Paul. “Mark my words”. Newt is now the only real alternative for the people who put a Republican Majority in Congress a few years ago.
Gingrich will get the nomination. And proves he deserves it by his constant display of all the strengths he’s now FORCED to show.

Newt Gingrich has dealt with the senate, the white house, and the judiciary. He has been in the oval office during big decisions. He impeached a president. He knows how the whole thing works.

Santorum has never been a member of any leadership that I know of. Newt's first hundred days as speaker got the contract with America passed and implemented. It is time to realize that only newt or Sarah who did the same stuff in Alaska have the guts AND experience to git ‘er done this time.

I could conceivably overlook Newt’s private life, as sad as it is. The problem I have is with his professional record. Gingrich seems to also have an open marriage with conservatism. For the last 13 years as a coin-operated lobbyist in Washington DC, he has advocated for numerous non-conservative causes:

* Freddie Mac and government-sponsored subprime mortgages - the main cause of our economic crisis
* Medicare D entitlement expansion - largest entitlement expansion since the 1960s
* Government intervention for global warming
* National health insurance mandate
* Corn ethanol subsidies

Gingrich was paid big bucks to do this. Given his reputation as a “conservative,” his word would carry more weight for these “progressive” causes. Gingrich has done enormous damage to conservatism just to make a buck. Now he claims to be the “Reagan conservative” candidate? Pardon me while I throw up.

I prefer Santorum hands-down over Newt. However, I think that this is the election where we absolutely MUST go on an ugly offensive against the dems. They attack us mercilessly and we just sit back, say “Duh”, and never respond or refute. I think Newt is the only one with the personality and knowledge to counter what we know is coming. They’re going to be ruthless; we have to be more ruthless.

Do you have any sources for the Santorum "Votes"?

.. looking into the Health care mandate one and it seems he "Supported" individual.. lots of shady sources so far and it seems to lead back to a quote. ("Santorum and Watkins both oppose having businesses provide health care for their employees. Instead, they would require individuals to purchase insurance. Both oppose higher taxes on alcohol or tobacco to help pay for care.") here-- http://articles.mcall.com/1994-04-07/news/2983594_1_wofford-s-campaign-manager-league-of-women-voters-health-care

Again, it would be great if these were sourced so we all know it's at least reasonably fair and accurate..
