Election '12: As Mitt Romney's loss in Iowa to Rick Santorum shatters the "historic" mantra, Rick Perry withdraws to endorse the former House speaker. The fat lady has not yet sung.
What a difference 24 hours can make in the political arena. One minute Romney looks to be sailing toward the GOP nomination with a third straight win in South Carolina's primary. Now it may only be one of three.
We may never really know who won the Iowa caucuses, but we do know that Romney's "historic" wins in both the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary deserve an asterisk next to them.
His eight-vote election-night win over Rick Santorum in the Hawkeye state has now been certified as a 34-vote loss. Results from eight precincts are missing any of which could hold an advantage for Romney and may never be recovered and certified.
Nor was the withdrawal of Perry from the race, coupled with an enthusiastic endorsement of Newt Gingrich, good news for the presumptive front-runner, wary of the "not Romney" vote coalescing into a majority.
Politics ain't beanbag, it's been said, and all the candidates have taken body blows some fair, some not from their opponents and a media establishment that, in addition to President Obama's billion-dollar war chest, will be hard for the GOP nominee to overcome.
Perry had his Gardasil and illegal tuition attacks from Michele Bachmann. Gingrich lost his lead when 45% of the ads run in Iowa attacked him on issues such as a consulting gig for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

I think we all know the answer. So who will alter the conversation and how will it be done?
The answer is; it isn't going to happen by preaching to the choir on sites like FR. Whiel we all share info here, our one liners don't mean much in the scheme of things. We need to batter our local papers with letters to the editor raising these issues. We need to be relentless. We need to reach the people who watch the propagandists like Brian Ross and never look into things for themselves.
The media hates you and everything you believe in!
This election is critical to the survival of our country. The republican nominee MUST defeat Obama. I know many don’t agree, but Newt/Mitt/Rick are ALL MUCH better than Obama.
Hell no, it not new. Its that the effort is just so much greater than in the past.

On that we will need to agree to disagree. We the people need a strong defense but for the USA only, not for the world.
Premptive wars are aka crony capitalism, where the rules can be bent not for America, but for those who benefit. It is about those that have who get more because taxpayers are forced to subsidize them. Wrong...you make a bet on a business and if you fail, you take the loss not taxpayers. Capitalism is about risk/reward and not subsidies from taxpayers
Other countries that wish to utilize our Dept of Defense should be subsidizing us, and not vice versa. We’re broke, remember.
From Diplomatic History of WW II
The U.S. declared war on Japan on December 8, 1941.
On December 11, Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S.A.
Later that same day, the U.S.A. declared war on Germany and Italy.
There is some question whether there would have been sufficient political support to declare war on Germany and Italy had they not declared war on us.
I take it, then, that you support the War on Terror -- since it was launched in direct response to a deadly attack on the USA.
Isn't that the number of votes, not the percentage points?
I live in a solid blue state. It will in no way, shape, or form go Republican no matter who the candidate is.
That is why I am making a strategic vote this year and voting for the Green Party.
If you are a Republican or conservative living in a solid blue state, and you DON'T vote for the Green Party then you are not thinking long term.
If the Green Party receives over 5% of the popular vote then they will get public funding in the next cycle and official recognition. They would be able to seriously petition to be included in debates, etc. They would force the Democrats to move openly left in order to court the Green vote.
This is bad for Democrats, and good for Republicans.
So even if my first choice was the Republican candidate, I'm still voting Green Party.
Any other choice is just being naive or stupid or both.
Interesting strategy, might have promise
Unless the GOP nominee is Romney. Romney would be worse than the kenyan. The Republican Congress might oppose aspects of the kenyans' socialism but woudl pass wholeheartedly the same socialism as proposed by Romney just because romney is a "Republican." Such an administration would lose that Republican Congress heavily to the Democrats in 2014 and would lose the presidency to a truly hard core Communist Democrat in 2016 and then the Amnesty that Romney would obtain with fast track citizenship for illegals would guarantee that after 2016 it would be a One Party Democrat Communist State and it would be a permanent condition. Is a Republican Socialist with a clear channel and a fair wind better than a Democrat Socialist hemmed in by reefs on a windward course?
I will vote for any Republican except Romney, even the Ronpaul. Romney should be the kenyan’s VP.
Thanks for posting this.
I was leaning Newt the last few days and as of Perry’s decision to
suspend his run, I am a Newt supporter as of today!
Sending money asap, amap.
Romney may suck, but Obama is the suckiest, suck suck of a President. ever. And he's dangerous. I'd vote for Hillary over Obama, and at one time my hatred of the Clintons was like no other. A Barack Obama set free for a second term with no fear of having to campaign would be hell on Earth. Lots of Executive orders, perhaps some new SC justices -- no way. Kagan and Sotomayer are moderates to what he'd throw on us if, God forbid, if something happened to one of the Conservatives. And there's no guarantee what Congress will look like to stop any nominations.
He will become a new element on the periodic table:
Yay! Newtonium Baby!
Got Newt? Use it!
If Romney is the nominee, they’ll have to do it without my help.
No Romney ever!
“I take it, then, that you support the War on Terror — since it was launched in direct response to a deadly attack on the USA.”
The WOT was launched because we failed to defend the USA on 9-11. The 11 year (now going on in-perpetuity) “War on Terror” has turned into a war against the rights and liberties of Americans. Instead of finding solutions we Americans are losing our treasury while others benefit. Now that we are broke we need a dialogue on what we can do to change it, instead of continuing to blindly wage it.
