U.S. Rep. Todd Platts' announcement Tuesday that he would not seek reelection this year could not have come at a worse time for ambitious Republicans and combative Democrats.
...
Retired Penn State University political science professor Michael Young agreed that Platts district is still too Republican for a Democrat to compete.
Its 10 years away from being a truly competitive district for Democrats, Young said. Its so packed [full of Republicans] that Democrats dont have much incentive to put a whole lot of resources into it.
That assessment acknowledges that the district has become less Republican through last years redistricting. The 4th District now has 196,051 Republicans, 152,731 Democrats, and 56,460 Independents a net gain of about 23,000 Democrats, party officials said.

Self-imposed term limit of 12 years. Way to go, Todd!

I was wondering about this. Still looks good for Republicans.
Todd represents CD PA-19, not PA-4.
It is still good for Republicans. All the new rats are from Harrisburg. Any republican running in a general election can completely ignore the entire city of Harrisburg and focus on the west shore. That approach will yield more net votes. Hopefully, the next rep will ignore Harrisburg city when it comes to federal appropriations. I can’t stand it when my tax dollars are washed through DC and into failing cities only to be squandered away by incompetent Democrats.
PA-19 is gone in the next election. PA lost a congressional seat. Old 4 and 12 have been basically merged into a new PA-12. PA-4 becomes most of the old 19, plus Harrisburg. At least one rat gets forced out of office.
See my post from last night on Platts. I know him well.
And conservatives have been beating him up for years. I can see how this would wear on him. I never have anything nice to say about him other than he's not a Democrat.

Does he moonlights as an advisor to Miss Ceo?? How can he say what will happen in terms of POLITICS 10 years from now!!
I notice everytime a Democrat resigns, nothing is said on it's impact on the Democrats chances to regaining the House, only when a Republican does.
The Republican resignations have come in strong GOP districts.
Democrat ones in mostly competitive ones.
It’s official, Scott Perry is running. I hope that he turns out to be more conservative than Todd Platts is.

Check posting #12.
Hopefully anyone running is more thoughtful than Todd Platts. Platt's announcing a week before petitions go out was an asinine move. I've talked to two people in the District that are royally pissed at Platts. It takes a while to build a campaign. People have commitments and if they knew earlier they would not have made those commitments. There was no urgency to Platt's decision. He wrapped himself in his belief that there should be term limits. 12-year term limits in particular. If that is true, then he should have known 12 years ago that he would not be running this year. He should have announced he was not running months ago.
Platt's move favors anyone in office that has some semblance of a campaign that can be quickly ramped up. That's the PA Republican machine ... choosing winners and losers while thinking us average folks can't think for ourselves.
Disclaimer: My statements are in no way are a reflection on Scott Perry. I know very little about him.
I just noticed this comment in the article.
“Its 10 years away from being a truly competitive district for Democrats, Young said”
What the hell is up with that? Is the area really trending rat or this guy one of those “Rising democrat majority” idiots?
Harrisburg is becoming more and more heavily Democrat every day, and York (the city) voted for Obama, but I doubt that even ten years from now the district will be truly competitive.
