Newt has been having a regular conference call with Tea Party leaders for over a year now. He is the only candidate that has established this direct line of communication. Generally, the feeling from Tea Party leaders that I know is that the communication has been two-way and there is a growing sense that Newt is responding very quickly to Tea Party perspectives on a number of important issues.

Nevertheless, there is still a substantial Tea Party opposition to Newt, as well.

In the fairly small town where I live I went to a couple of organized gatherings supposedly sponsored by the tea party. It didn't take me long to realize that mostly libertarians had claimed that group.
