The Gingrich campaign launched a preemptive strike as news spread that ABC plans to broadcast a potentially damaging interview with Newt Gingrichs second ex-wife on Thursday just two days before Saturdays crucial South Carolina primary.
Gingrichs daughters (from his first marriage) Kathy Lubbers and Jackie Cushman came to their fathers defense in a letter released by his presidential campaign.
The failure of a marriage is a terrible and emotional experience for everyone involved. Anyone who has had that experience understands it is a personal tragedy filled with regrets, and sometimes differing memories of events, the daughters said in the letter addressed to ABC News Leadership.
We will not say anything negative about our fathers ex-wife. He has said before, privately and publicly, that he regrets any pain he may have caused in the past to people he loves, the letter said.
The daughters also said the former House Speaker intends to stay on message, suggesting one thing he will not be talking about in South Carolina is the ABC interview.

This is all bullshit! Obama is the target. Can we remember that, please!
Sometimes a flawed soul steps forward to do the right thing. Question is will others support him... when weighed against the alternative? I would, but whether others feel the same? I could not imagine a conservative “KNOWINGLY” put Obama in for another term, but I’ve lived long enough to know that I haven’t seen nothin’ yet.
Dick Armey used to be my congressman. When he left congress to make money, he tried to get his retard son elected in his place, but Dr. Michael Burgess defeated this effort. My guess is that Gingrich stepped all over Armeys ego many times. But Armey was probably right to say that as speaker Newt lacked focus.
Youre hilarious! It must be all that city sophistication.
I begin to think that Perry wasnt physically up to going on stage those first debates.
If enough people can vote against Romney, however, wherever, maybe we can end up with a brokered convention. Otherwise, it'll be two flavors of statists and bidness as usual in DC.
I know he wasnt.
Field expedient hardhead! I like the way you think!
At least my candidates can speak in public without freezing up in the clutch.
Oops..
Perry (3%) has three more days until he’s back in Austin FOR GOOD.
“I would argue that Perry was 2nd in response from the crowd, and I dont understand how he is discounted out of hand.”
Perry continuously looks like a dumb-ass. A candidates position on the issues take a back seat to his abilty to forcefully communicate them.
Sanction would have sufficed.
I’m shocked as well. Cain was an innocent man, and rather then stand by him and rally around the cause, we’re supposed to get behind Newt?
Like you said, I see Santorum the same way. Folks have got to back the candidate that is closest to their beliefs and go from there. Otherwise we end up with Dole redux.
“Santorum flat out stinks as a candidate.”
Well, that may be true but he’s got FIVE TIMES the votes that Perry has in the south’s first primary.
So why do the other candidates continually steal his lead?
And you all applaud like circus seals?
Good luck with that.
“Free enterprise? Like Enron never happened? Capitalism is not an ideology whose devotees are made pure through its practice and who every action must be defended. Businessmen can be crooks and shady operators, too.”
If they are crooks then they should be tried in a court of law. This is just a political attack on a company that affects everyone who works at Bain, not just Romney.
True, in the big scheme of things, conservatives really don’t give a ...care.
Not a fan of Perry, but the plain fact is that he has done an outstanding job as governor. One thing I liked about his candidacy is that his strength as a politician is that he is a plugger. He doesnt come across as a superman but as a competent politician. Not many of those around. He is centainly better than Bush.
