Conservatives Call on Rick Perry to Exit Race
abcnews.go.com/blogs ^ | 1/18/2012 | Arlette Saenz

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Several prominent conservatives have called for Rick Perry to call his presidential bid quits, with one blogger urging the Texas governor to end his campaign and throw his backing toward Newt Gingrich.

Erick Erickson, the founder of RedState.com, the website that hosted the event where Perry announced his presidential bid in August, penned an entry today calling Perry a potential “kingmaker” in the South Carolina primary if he drops out before the weekend.

“Barring a miracle, this is Rick Perry’s final act in the 2012 elections. On Saturday, he will come in last in South Carolina,” Erickson wrote in a diary entry on RedState today. “Perry, however, has a potential trump card up his sleeve as he rebuilds political capital. It’s simple: he can drop out today, and endorse someone else. Doing so today, before the CNN debate tomorrow, gives the news time to sink in.”

Erickson suggested that the Texas governor’s choice of an endorsement would likely be Gingrich, not Romney or Santorum.

Earlier in the day, radio host Laura Ingraham urged the Texas governor to leave the race in order to boost another social conservative over front-runner Mitt Romney. “It’s time for Rick Perry to drop out of the race — he is only helping Romney by splitting the vote,” Ingraham tweeted.

I have watched you spit in the faces of good conservatives all in the name of Palin being they’re competition.

I reject that slander. All I ever did was defend Sarah Palin against the unhinged and irrational looney tune attacks that were legion on this website for almost three years.

I never gave a damn whether anyone disagreed with Sarah Palin on substance, but discussions about her record, or where she stood on important issues were few and far between around here. Mostly, a rabid contingent of howling monkeys showed up to throw their excrement at Palin supporters, every time her name was mentioned.

And for your information, I've held my tongue far more often than I've loosed it. A person would go insane around here, otherwise.

I will be very happy when Santorum wins in SC, after you have told us all that it is impossible. :)

Don't try to walk it back now, big man. You as much as said that you're looking forward to a good gloat if Newt doesn't win SC. I heard you loud and clear.

Remember how we got McCain?

Happened in SC... I believe.

Candidates either run out of money or the endorsements go to the front runner along with the big donors.

It IS possible that Romney becomes the default nominee.

Remember McCain.

(whenever I think about Romney I see McCain standing... to the far right)

I never saw Palin attacked I did see anger from posters that were disgusted because Bachmann and Perry were. The Palin fans not Palin were what caused any strife. If you never called Bachmann and Perry personal names of attack then I apologize but there was a group amongst your ping lists that surely did; very obviously because they were competition to Palin.

I am praying for a miracle and Perry wins. Next is Santorum.
The polls when Perry first got in were smearing all and Obama in a knockout. After all the crap I think a brain fart should be forgotten as well as his immigration stance is better than Newts if not the same.Perry would secure that damn border that I know;I remember the note he passed to Obama when Obama landed in TX. (donning a cowboy hat for photo ops-or was this the year before?)Perry wanted federal help on the borders ASAP and Obama ignored him.

Well, before Santorum’s showing in Iowa I was going to put my support behind Perry.

Perry has the executive experience that Newt is sorely lacking. I don’t like him as much as I do Santorum, but he’d be a good president too.

I’m really starting to get tired of having progressive republicans shoved at me though.

You have GOT to be kidding. The unhinged "PDS" attacks against Palin on this website are legendary, and are documented in literally hundreds of threads that stretch back over at least three years.

I find it hard to believe that any active Freeper could have missed that.

I suppose if you haven’t even vetted or studied the candidate you support it’s all hearsay.

“I suppose if you haven’t even vetted or studied the candidate you support it’s all hearsay.”

Yes I have done so. I don’t see the evidence for what you are claming.

From what I can see you are relying on hearsay.

If there’s evidence, I’d like to see it.

>>I don’t see the evidence for what you are claming.<<

I’m claiming? Take it up with poster. I’ve seen the evidence and have satisfied myself. Deny it and find for yourself if for some strange reason he stays in. The left will excoriate him with it if you don't deal with it now. I’m in SC and am voting for Gingrich on Saturday.

“Take it up with poster”

Uh, I’m asking you. You are using it as evidence. If you don’t have a source for evidence that you are passing on to other people, that’s bad.

“I’ve seen the evidence and have satisfied myself”

Ok, is all the evidence that you saw in that post? Or is there other stuff you are relying on?

“Deny it and find for yourself”

It’s up to the person making the claim to provide evidence for the claim. I’m amenable, but I have to see independent confirmation outside of the FR post.

“The left will excoriate him with it if you don’t deal with it now.”

Deal with what? All I see is hearsay without evidence behind it. If the evidence is shown that he actually did vote for these things, then sure.

Well, I’ll give you my reasoning.

His support of pro-choice liberal Arlen Specter that proved decisive in the 2004 GOP primary against pro-life conservative Pat Toomey. Isn’t he claiming a strong pro life stance? Lost my support there. That Specter win with his subsequent switch to the Democratic Party gave the Dems the 60 vote majority didn’t it. Thank your buddy Santorum.

Santorum worked for No Child Left Behind, a proposal that trampled the conservative view that education was strictly a local matter. He was right there with Ted Kennedy on that one.

His own statements in support of pork barrel projects flys in the face of claiming to be a fiscal conservative.

And those only the ones that most everybody should remember let alone have to look up.

Santorum is a fake.

Who is “dissing” Texas? And lets not dumb-down this site by injecting words used by an illiterate culture, which believes any effort to become educated is to “act white.” I don’t think you are against people becoming educated, but if I were you, I would stop borrowing language from a culture that is!

Your soapbox is starting to come apart with all your assumptions. I never claimed allegiance to the Gingrich campaign, your ego and emotional attachment to Santorum did.

You're just another one of those whiny fanboys that is oblivious to reason and pragmatism.

Just this morning, we have a hint about ABC news agonizing over whether it is ethical to release a interview with Newt's ex- before the South Carolina primary. The rumor is that it could "Jack Ryan" him out of the race.

Who is so naive to think that this won't be aired before the general election if Newt makes it that far?

Another question: Does Newt have sealed divorce records? What do you think the chances are of them remaining sealed? In Jack Ryan's case, the wife wanted them to remain sealed as well. How did that work out?
