Dobson decried Callista Gingrich as 'eight-year mistress' at conservative confab
Politico ^ | 1-17-12 | Haberson

Posted on 01/17/2012 2:50:57 PM PST by VinL

At the now-controversial meeting of evangelicals at a Texas ranch, influential evangelical leader James Dobson made a strong pitch for Rick Santorum's wife — and noted that Callista Gingrich was her husband's "mistress for eight years," questioning whether that's what people want in a first lady, three sources told POLITICO.

The moment left several attendees at the confab at the Pressler ranch stunned, according to the sources.

It came on Saturday, before the group of about 150 conservatives voted on a candidate they wanted to back. On the third round of balloting, the vote went to Santorum, but Gingrich backers and other attendees have argued that the voting was done unfairly, and in a way that seemed to benefit the former Pennsylvania senator.

The meeting was initially described as an event to try to unite behind a single candidate to thwart Mitt Romney, but his representatives also ended up speaking there, and despite the third round of balloting — which took place after some Gingrich backers left, thinking the meeting had ended — broad consensus was never reached, according to multiple attendees.

"Dobson first talked about how great Santorum is," recalled one source, who had first-hand knowledge of Dobson's comment. "[He said,] 'I want to tell you that I've gotten to know Karen [Santorum] and she is just lovely. She set aside two professional careers to raise these seven children. She would make a fabulous first lady role model. And Newt Gingrich's wife, she was a mistress for eight years."

Another source confirmed the account, and said Dobson concluded the sentiment about Callista Gingrich with, "Who do you want as your first lady?"

"It was like a chill [set into] the room," said one source. Several people were offended by the comment, said another source, adding that it was noted among some participants that Callista Gingrich had only been married once.

Dobson....Forgive 30 time rapist and murder Ted Bundy.

Yet point to Callista Gingrich.

...and ignore Karen Santorum’s adultery.

“Dobson interviewed serial killer Ted Bundy on camera the day before he was executed, in January 1989. The interview was controversial as Bundy was given an opportunity to attempt to explain his actions (the rape and murder of 30 young women). Bundy seemed to blame pornography, something he had never mentioned in hundreds of hours of police and psychological interviews. Dobson is adamantly against pornography. There is also controversy over how much input the relatives of the murder victims had as regards the interview and whether they agreed that it should happen or not. In May 1989, during an interview with John Tanner, a Republican Florida prosecutor, Dobson called for Bundy to be forgiven. The Bundy tapes gave Focus on the Family earnings of over $1 million ...Wiki

I want proof Dobson said this.
Three unnamed witnesses?
How convenient.

Here is the NPR article.
Not a word about Dobson’s comment.

The only main source I can see is the abortion doctor and his wife.

Yet some people want to lap up the story.

I think I'll wait for a better source myself.

In reply to my post, you then indicate:

That you have no specific definition of immorality- but whatever that definition may be- its “substandard”— Well, that illuminating. Thanks

You then indicate that you accede to your “Christian leaders” assessment of morality— well, fine– I don’t. I derive my morality from my personal relationship with God- absent intermediaries.

Then, incredibly, you argue that God’s command to refrain from judgment is superceded by an obligation to personally enforce the tenets of the Lord- e.g negative behavior. If that is your conclusion, that is your misapprehension. God tells us what we shouldn’t do, but allows that when we transgress, we have the right to redemption. Calista and Newt were in love, and it might have well been an illicit affair- but at end point, Calista and Newt married and sought redemption and forgiveness from the Lord for their past indiscretion. God forgave them– but, you and Mr Dobsom appear to wish to take on God’s role here on earth and judge all of us.

There is absolutely nothing in the public record thatI know of, that would preclude Calista from being a First Lady- the judgments by you and Dobson notwithstanding.

Ironic that Newt mentioned Andrew Jackson last night, and, like Jackson he must endure slanderous comments on his wife. Apparently Newt did so well he must be punished.

Shame on all the hypocrites. Let he without sin cast the first stone....

Got any other source besides the word of an abortion doc?

You may enjoy slander but you have zero credibility until you come up with a real story.

According to the scriptures if a man just LOOKS at a woman with lust in his heart..it is a sin.

We've already been through this one.

Why are you judging the so-called hypocrites. Are you without sin that you can be casting stones?

...ur preaching to the choir bro.....I don’t like these “so called preachers” that think they are holier than thou....

Sounds to me as if this Dobson has little or NO KNOWLEDGE of God’s word...if he does, he has sure perverted and twisted it into his own brand of a warped religion.

Some are refusing to believe the stories about Mrs. Santorum, just like they refused to believe them about Cain.
It won’t matter. When the Libs get through with this, he’s done.

Who's enforcing?

The whole discussion is about whether one is allowed to ever speak negatively about behavior. You claim never, yet you are judging me. What a laugh.

A christian leader who doesn't like sexual immorality. Horrors! Who has heard of such a thing?

Amazing how so many Freepers who claim to be christian are up in arms over a christian leader in the family arena who desires sexual purity in a Presidential candidate. Really quite amazing.

I’m just sick of external Christianity. I don’t know Dr. Dobson, but I have increasingly come to see the brand of religion he stands for as empty and superficial.

Perhaps people like him are why Evangelical youth are fleeing in droves for liberal postmodern strands of Evangelicalism or are rejecting faith altogether.

I used to respect Dr. Dobson and defend him, and he was friends with people I have known.

There is too much emphasis on condemnation and not enough on repentance and forgiveness. I take Newt at his word barring that he is secretly skirt-chasing behind his current wife’s back.

No!!! Yu’re not off the hook for your un-Christian position. The discussion is NOT about speaking to negative behavior, it’s about Dobson and you saying that Calista can not be a First Lady because she is “immoral”!

That’s the discussion. That’s why you’re losing the debate! Because your position is un-Christian and indefensible.

You and Dobson prefer a different candidate- fine!!!! To caste Calista as a prostitute unfitting of being First Lady in order to support your nominee, is a black mark to one’s soul.

Contrary to your dismissive- “that’s a laugh”— it is not! Thankfully, there is a forgivng God.
