MONTEVIDEO Unconditional bail was set at $750,000 this morning for Darek Jon Nelson, 24, of Montevideo, who faces murder and manslaughter charges for the stabbing death of 18-year-old Vinessa Lozano Friday night in Montevideo.
Nelson made his first appearance before District Judge Dwayne Knutsen in Chippewa County District Court.
According to the complaint, Nelson began planning to kill Lozano on Jan. 9, after he became upset that Lozano didnt come to his home on Jan. 8. Nelson told investigators that he hid a knife in his hooded sweatshirt while he worked his shift at the Pizza Ranch restaurant. He then ambushed co-worker Lozano from behind as she left the restaurant, stabbing her more than 30 times.
The last portion of the stabbing was captured on the video recorder of the first Montevideo Police squad car responding to the scene. Lozano also identified Nelson as her killer to the responding officer. She later died at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital.
During the incident, Nelson also chased away another restaurant worker who attempted to come to Lozanos aid during the stabbing.
Lozanos mother and stepfather, Robin and Dalton Savoy, of Montevideo and her father, Eric Lozano, of Willmar, attended the hearing. The Savoys said they have been overwhelmed by community support since their daughters death.
I wish we had the death penalty in Minnesota, Eric Lozano said after the hearing.

Not really. An old cop told me once that multiple stab wounds are the norm, simply because it takes a few minutes to die of stabbing and people who are trying to kill you by stabbing don't stop until you're dead.
You are actually reaching to blame the girl for being stabbed to death by a sick monster. Very warped thinking. Possibly brought on by sexual frustration.
Lots of ifs. Your use of quotes for single mother is telling.
Lots of ifs. Your use of quotes for single mother is telling.
Are you a victimologist? The one victim is the child. Considering the likelihood that child will be adopted by the grandmother and step-grandfather, the child has a better chance in life. Being the child of a poor single mom is rough.
Perhaps the young woman was indeed engaged. That’s the report, take it for what any post-facto news report is worth. The reality is she was not married, and she was one to two years along as a mother.
We all hope the child will have a happy life. We hopefully wish all mothers would be married, and sympathize with the poor children born into this chaotic world without a real Dad.
Objection noted, and a reasonable one. Gruesome subject. The assailant intended to murder, as he stabs and stabs until death is obvious.
Still, death by such stabbing still speaks to sexual passion, iirc. Did your friend say what the motives were in those cases of homicide involving many stabbings?
What “does” it tell?
I’m not sexually frustrated. I am a student of predator prey situations. This was one.
My hunch is her “single motherhood” combined with her felicity towards him aroused the murderous passions in the predator.
Huh? All I did was go to the news site that showed that woman and posted it here so people could see what this murderer did. This place gets crazier every day.
You are just frustrated. Period.
You should drag out all your epithets and punctuation marks, eh? Give them all a work out.
Perhaps you should become a student of why certain people are driven to blame the victim in crimes, instead of the perpetrator. For some reason your instinct is to assume that victims deserve it, maybe because of some deep seated issues of your own. It might be helpful to talk to someone about that.
Me, I think the blame lies pretty much with the guy with the knife
.
Does it seem I misunderstood your post to stuartcr? That may be. It was an overreach on my part. If it is that I did mistake what you meant, my apologies.
Yet in our times there is often an overwrought sympathy for the “victim” that prevents learning fully from the crime that was committed what may be learned to prevent such crimes.
Sir. To avoid many crimes, don’t become prey. That is my advice.
If we keep ourselves from looking like, or from being prey, there are many fewer crimes.
The only thing I did was post a picture of the victim. It was from a news site. I didn’t go out to find her Facebook page and post a picture from that. It was a news photo. Then I get all sorts of replies regarding her privacy. Sometime I wonder ..... never mind.
It was then my mistake when I mis-addressed you. I apologize.
If you had not posted the picture, I would not have known how pretty she was. My first thoughts were that it was just so sad. Perhaps, the souls of these people were reflected in the pictures here.
I think your hunch is stupid. There are numerous examples of non single mothers and single non mothers being the object of such obsessives and getting murdered
She was pretty, she was female and she was probably polite, nice and caring, ie feminine as opposed to rude, uncaring and unsympathetic to the douche bag.
He got twisted ideas about what he had a right to and deserved.
The only way to protect yourself as a pretty young female is to assume ALL males are predators until proven otherwise and be prepared to kill them by being armed and to stay the hell out of situations where as a female you may be at a disadvantage.
Thinking like yours inspires epithets.
Your posts disgust me. I see no facts in evidence that this girl deserved to die at the hands of this maladjusted little twerp. Yet you can sit there and imagine that she brought it all on herself.
There still might be time to attend the funeral, and perhaps you can share your advice with her family. I’m sure they’d love to hear it.
