Is he well connected to politicians who got him his position because he kissed the right a$$?
This is the usual result of putting incompetant boobs in positions of power
Like Obama, who is about to sink the US too.

When danger reared its ugly head
He bravely turned his tail and fled
Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about
And gallantly he chickened out
Bravely talking to his feet
He beat a very brave retreat

Looks like we have Obama’s new Transportation Secretary. Maybe even a possible new head for the NTSB.

"Junior officers led a 'mutiny' after he dithered in giving orders"
Good. Too bad the helmsman didn't choose to stay a little more off shore or slow way down.
(Was a local pilot on board? Should there have been one?)

'Offered to return to doomed cruise liner, but only to collect black box' Sounds more like a bus driver than a sea captain. Keel-haul him! Should be easy - the keel is pretty close to the surface.

Question: How did this guy ever attain the position of captain of a cruise ship?

***Stricken cruise liner captain DID abandon ship before passengers AND refused to go back when ordered***
something similar happened quite few years ago. A cruise ship started to sink and the Captain and crew immediately abandoned ship leaving the passengers to fend for themselves.
The captain’s claim was he wanted to establish a command center OFF THE SHIP so he could then begin rescuing the passengers.

Q: How many people does it take to captain the Costa Concordia?
A: One and a fifth.
- recycled Joseph Hazelwood “Exxon Valdez” joke.

Has anyone else noticed that the ads for Cruise.com on the Travel Channel feature an aerial shot of the Costa Concordia?

In addition to his other problems, the captain is facing a trademark infringement suit over his personal coat-of-arms:
