Newt Gingrich's fluent, policy-rich performances in the early debates, laced with derision for the media's attempts to question the Republican candidates, propelled him to the front of the GOP pack in early December.
His command of the stage here in Myrtle Beach for the 16th (yep, there have been that many, and the next is in Charleston on Thursday) could just be the lifeline he needs to achieve the task he has set himself - overcoming Mitt Romney's clear lead in the South Carolina polls to win the state on Saturday.
Romney was under pressure over releasing his tax returns (he eventually said that he would "probably" do so in April), on why he had not objected as Massachusetts governor to felons on parole having the right to vote and he gave an awkward, fumbling response to a softball about whether he had been hunting since 2007, even mixing up moose and elk.
Gingrich, however, ... scored quite a few points against Romney and the former Speaker's fluency with policy and ability to dissect questions and make a big-picture conservative case against Obama made him the night's big winner.
There were two standing ovations for Gingrich in the hall, where 3,000 Republicans roared, cheered ...
Gingrich said that in the debate room "there was a strong sense that somebody finally just had the courage to tell the truth about how we've got to go about helping people".
"...it's clear if you look at the polls the only conservative who can beat Romney in South Carolina is Newt Gingrich... we have five days to win South Carolina. I think we will win South Cariolina."
A lot of conservatives are queasy about Romney and unconvinced that he could beat the President in November.

GREAT LINE!
Newt all the way to the White House!
Up here, we refer to them as "Mass-holes".
And--proof of the truth in what you posted is how delighted Juan Williams seemed after the debate. Not the kind of reaction one might expect of to someone who was deeply concerned about a "bruised ego"!
I’ll give you that. Perry rocked last night.
That was so evident in the post-debate conversation. Both Juan's words and the animation in his face indicated a positive response to Newt.
And the pitcher is NOT on the "other team"--though he might put on the uniform for the "game". But, as I think Juan Williams understands very well, politics is not JUST a game. It is often a matter of freedom's life--or death!
it says you cannot run for president unless you are from a state that always votes heavily in your party’s favor, and that republicans will be destroyed because the media and opponent will simply spend a billion dollars savaging them in their home state, while the liberal from new york gets a pass.
Watch Newt beat Juan here...
Oooops! You got tons of links already. FReepers rock!
Or Obama.
I haven’t read Juan’s book. Thank you for correcting my perception of him.
That elections matter.
That voting for voting for the most likable guy, instead of the grumpy guy that knew what he was talking about has caused us big problems in the past.
That voting with your feeling instead of with your brain has caused us problems.
I’m not serious when I say that...although it makes a candidate look really weak if they do lose their home state.
If Romney still lists Massholechusetts as his home state, he will lose here badly, making him look even weaker, even if he did win POTUS. And you can bet the MSM will never tire of reminding the masses that Romney lost his home state.
Another reason for Romney not to be the nominee is control of the US Senate: Romney as the nominee will get more Rat voters out here and that means they’ll also vote for Lizzy the Carpetbagger against RINO Brown which could decide the balance of Senate.
Perry isn’t doing well in the polls but ur sure gotta love the guy........! I find myself rooting for him every time he speaks.
He does have a big heart for our country.....!
I could easily support the guy.....!
Also, what happened to the children murdered by the Nazis
in the French palace in which Romney lived which then FINANCIALLY benefited Romney?
Any of these is a viable October surprise.
Bain Capital, has cut checks totaling $90,000 to Romneys operation.
I don't know how any conservative could "gladly support" a man who's record shows him to be a pale imitation of Barack Obama.
Oh, and welcome to Free Republic.
Look at the information Dio posted. Do you have anything in your files about the topic?
Perry will be 69 in eight years. Not exactly the prime age for a presidential contender. He'll be long out of the Texas Governor's office by that time, and largely irrelevant.
Just my opinion, but I think 2012 is his best shot.
Karl Rove is the biggest enemy the republican party has. He has utmost contmept and disdain for conservatives and does everything within his power to belittle and destroy all of our conservative candidates.
It amazes me that “so called” conservative media folks invite the lying, blue blood socialist on their show to give a conservtive point of view.
What are they thinking and were is their loyalty.......?
