(MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.) -- Amid continued pressure from his rivals to make public his tax returns, Mitt Romney said at a Republican presidential candidates debate Monday night that he will "probably" release that information in April.
That timetable is in line with tradition of past nominees, who have released their information around tax day in early April.
"I have nothing in them that suggests there is any problem," he said. "I'm happy to do so."
Romney had said as recently as last Wednesday that he doesn't feel the need to do anything more than the law requires him to do, which is reveal his assets.
Rick Perry took the lead in assailing the former Massachusetts governor, accusing him of dodging the question of tax records and called on him to release them before a nominee is decided.
"My income tax have been out every year. Newt [Gingrich], I think you will let your income tax come out Thursday. And Mitt, we need for you to release your income tax so the people of this country can see how you made your money," the Texas governor said. "Here's the real issue for us as Republicans. We cannot fire our nominee in September. We need to know now."
Not surprisingly, just a cursory examination of Federal Election Commission campaign finance reports shows Romney banked over $798,000 from employees of TARP recipients.

Perry on Mitt. Some highlights:
Perry's ad: Carbon Copies [:60]
Perry rattles Mitt: That's -- I'm running for office, for Pete's sake, I can't have illegals. [video clip]
And Perry's gone after Mitt (A LOT) on hiding his support for mandated health care (remember the $10,000. bet?).
Perry's ad:
I hope Moot was wearing a cup, tonight.
Haven’t seen a good gang beating like this since that night outside the DelMar biker bar.
[old chinese master] Ah, yes. Chameleon, master of Mitt Kune Do. Be like the wind... [/old chinese master]
Perry was very good last night! :-)
I really like the man... A great ticket would be Gingrich/Perry.
I know you would prefer Perry/Gingrich but it looks like it’s Newt in a more powerful position this time out.
I like Santorum but I want to see him resign from the race before the SC primary. I want Perry to resign and perhaps take his place at Newt’s side as the likely VP.
We gotta consolidate around Newt this time before Romney takes the nomination.
I wish that somehow Newt and the two Ricks could all share the presidency but alas such is not possible. However it is possible for Perry to be VP and Santorum to score a very important spot in the administration. Also, I’d love Paul to run the Fed..lol
If Perry had Newt’s ability to persuade and communicate he would be absolutely the perfect candidate. I don’t fault Perry for his position on Texas in-state tuition.
Romney answering the question about his taxes, reminded me of a dog with a half-swallowed string stuck in his mouth. He can’t get it down, can’t get it out, and he just keeps busily working his jaws.
Once Romney releases his tax returns, only then will I consider voting for him. But he should be warned that the Georgia primary occurs some time before April.
“We cannot fire our nominee in September.”
Is that true? I mean, even if he won the most votes in the primaries, if we found out he had some disqualifying baggage, wouldn’t the party be able to remove him from the ticket at the convention or even later?
I immediately noticed that, too, as Romney-the-RINO squirmed and stammered, saying essentially that “Nominate me, and then MAYBE I’ll think about releasing my Tax Records”.....looked bad doing that.
Translation:
“I’m going to fight like a demon to keep anything incriminating about myself hidden until after I’m the nominee and it’s too damn late for you to do anything about it.”
Mittens reminds me of a slick, used car salesman who you know upon first meeting him, that if not careful, will end up paying top dollar for a lemon.
He is wayyyyyy too "smooth" and the consummate politician for my taste; that and he will NEVER beat O'Bummer in a debate as he is nothing but a RINO, wuss.
Newt on the other hand would eviscerate Dear Leader and would have the neo-Commie talking to himself.
I don’t remember Romney stuttering like this years ago.
I wonder what is up with ole Mitt’s tax returns? lol
Sure sounds like the fix is in.
“Gee...he reminded me of someone else...can’t think of the name, right now.”
LOL! Some people are just too creative.
Bump!
