An infant girl found wrapped in a towel on the front steps of a Northeast residence late Sunday night later died, and police are investigating the case as a homicide.
A resident of the 3000 block of Channing Street, NE, was walking home when he saw the unidentified infant on the steps of another home in the same block, police said Tuesday morning. After finding the baby cold and unconscious, he brought the baby into his home and called 911.
Police and Fire and Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene shortly after 11:30 p.m. and found a neighbor performing CPR on the infant. The baby was then taken to Childrens National Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 2:21 a.m. on Monday.
Lt. Robert Alder, a homicide supervisor for the Metropolitan Police, said that detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the death of the baby, described as an African American infant less than one week old. Detectives hope that they can speak to the parent or parents who left the child on the stoop, Alder said, and are awaiting autopsy results expected Monday.
This is a tragedy, an infant left out in the cold at night, Alder said.
Temperatures at Reagan National Airport dipped below freezing between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Sunday night, and at the time the baby was found before midnight, temperatures were hovering at about 28 degrees, according to National Weather Service records.
In 2009, the District enacted the Safe Haven law, which allows parents of unwanted babies less than a week old to drop them off at hospitals and fire or police stations without risk of prosecution, as long as the child remains unharmed. It was unclear why the baby was left at the specific doorstep on Channing Street.

Hows that? Clear?
I suppose that person would be haunted by the thought that one day the child will grow up, and find out who their biological parent was, and have to come face-to-face with them. I could see where people that evil wouldn't want to face that possibility.
If the mother had instead gone to a Planned Parenthood clinic a week earlier and had a doctor kill the baby, we would instead be celebrating her right to choose.
Some of us are not familiar with “happenings” on Channing Street. Enlighten us, please.
How was that answer? Clear? Were you expecting something else? Fishing with a little race bait? Feel “enlightened?”
Poor baby/ I hope they find whoever left her there to die, considering her as just an inconvenient byproduct of recreational sex.
I can only say that it’s a good thing garbage disposals are so small.
Possibly...I would be surprised though if the resident didn’t know the perpetrator.
How sad....
Some abortion clinic workers who have converted claim many clinics dump the bodies of babies in the garbage disposal so that us crazy pro-lifers don’t dig them out of dumpsters & give them a proper burial, as many priests have done.
Oh yeah, the abortion industry is more depraved than people realize.
Ping.
With Safe Haven laws in place, there’s NO REASON for this. Just disgusting.
“Some of us are not familiar with “happening” on Channing Street”
I do believe that area is just over the P.G. County line. No, it isn’t a “nice” place. It is one of the rougher sections.
OK...I need therapy...for the rest of the afternoon I'm planning my escape to the south seas when the shtf...lets see the checklist...dvds...ramen noodles...rolling papers...fishhooks...
This is very similar to a late term abortion. The only difference was the baby was not cut into pieces and thrown into a dumpster.
thanks for saying that... it always makes me crazy when people excuse that too.
They usually point out that “they were not used to” dealing w/the child so that is why they forgot it, but remembered their briefcase and dry cleaning.
The 3,000 Block of Channing is not one of the rougher places in DC, In fact it isn’t a bad neighborhood as far as Washington neighborhoods are concerned.
It is not far from the DC line Between South Dakota and New York Avenue’s , Bladensburg Rd. and New York Ave.
Sorry.
Obviously, as FReepers, we agree that abortion is horrific & a national crime. But I do believe, IMHO, that the “industry” as sanitized itself in the public arena. I was always “pro-life”, but I truthfully didn’t give it much thought. It seemed like this nice little clinical, surgical procedure. Then one day, something moved me to start reading. When I realized the absolute horrifying nature of what is actually done & how truly evil these people are, I’ve never looked at it the same
I wish more people knew the truth. That’s why I support showing graphic images of aborted babies - torn apart, dismembered, & bloody. People need to wake up.
