The latest Insider Advantage / Newsmax poll of likely South Carolina voters, taken on Sunday, shows Mitt Romney opening up a commanding 11-point lead… and that was before Jon Huntsman dropped out of the race and endorsed Romney. Hell, Huntsman’s still a point ahead of Rick Perry in this poll.
Mitt Romney - 32
Newt Gingrich - 21
Ron Paul - 14
Rick Santorum – 13
Jon Huntsman – 6
Rick Perry – 5
Strangely, according to the poll breakdown, Newt Gingrich scored exactly zero among the youngest cohort of voters, ages 18-29. Ron Paul and Rick Santorum were tied among that group, with 27 percent each.
This poll has a fairly small sample of 720 respondents, but they’re “likely voters,” generally the most reliable group. If the results are accurate, it looks as if that “tightening race” in South Carolina has loosened back up, and undecided voters are starting to break for Romney. If Huntsman’s endorsement sends some of his supporters Romney’s way, and he holds the enormous 22-point lead Rasmussen found for him in Florida last week, Romney could end up taking both states in a walk.

Unfortunately the clear sharp choice is showing us the majority of the GOP isn’t actually conservative but a mix. Romney is garnering enough conservative support that the moderate GOPers and the independents that Obama has lost are flocking to him.
Sad as it is, Romney isn’t going to win anything. Our only hope is taking the Senate.
A Romney Presidential candidate will have the political attractiveness of cold chicken soup.
Now, any site's owners are allowed to do that, (OK, Jim?) If I started a site and wanted to limit it to only atheist, pro-life, NASCAR fan, pro-drug legalization conservatives who opposed TARP and want to nuke Mecca, that's my privilege.
But having done that, I don't have much ground to claim that I represent "the only true conservatism" and start yelling "Conspiracy!!!" every time that GOP registered voters pick a candidate that does not reflect my exact menu of opinions.
There is no THE Tea Party. There is merely a very loose movement of very Right-wing people. The impulse that gave birth to the tea party (deliberately lower cased) is not new in American politics, but goes back many generations. It's like the tide, flowing in and out every so often, picking up new identifying labels like so much flotsam.
The tea party heritage goes back to at least the old America First movement of the 1930's, if not even further back. Ross Perot tapped into it in the early 1990's and helped get Bill Clinton into the presidency. We also had the militia movement during that period, until it died with Oklahoma City.
This old tide began to rise again in 2005 and might have peaked in 2010. We'll see. In the meantime, until it wanes again, it will help elect Democrats.

Neither. I think the Paul supporters might be tolerated on FR, but there won’t be any groundswell of support for us on FR.
I think most FReepers will go down with the ship rather than get on a lifeboat that has “libertarian” stenciled on it.
But of course.
On a conservatism scale where John Q. Freeper is a 10 and Obama is (of course) Zero, the typical Republican voter is probably a 6-7.
Freepers who spend all their time over in "10-land" seem to forget about this, with the result being that they are shocked right out of their socks every time a comparatively moderate GOP candidate (Mitt this year) shows strength.
That's like choosing between taking cyanide or taking ricin.
But we will be at that juncture soon, barring a miracle.
I will be writing the GOP and dropping my Republican registration...if / when Romney wins the nomination.

I can stomach Paul except on Israel. That is a deal breaker for me as a Christian, what with Israel beiong the lumchpin of the end times and all. Romney is a non-starter. The Wall Street/Politician axis has to be broken. Romney is one of them, like Geithner, Rubin, and Corzine. We need a Wall Street/Washington outsider.

Paul doesn’t stand a chance outside of his circle of pot-smoking flunkies. All the Ron Paul Rage in the world won’t stand up to the machinations of the GOP elite. When it comes down to Socialist R and Socialist D, we’ll have lost before a single vote is cast.
I keep looking for a break in the circular firing squad, something to give me hope about South Carolina and Florida, but it just isn’t there. The Perry people are oblivious to their candidate’s single-digit support and complete lack of momentum, and the Santorum supporters keep insisting that Newt needs to drop out.
This would be a great time for a miracle. Other than that, I think we’ll be seeing a political repeat of the Broncos vs Patriots.
If you are so sure that Newt can win, he best be posting a victory or in the top 2 real soon. So far, he hasn’t placed well.
No use asking others to drop out for a 4th place contender.
Perhaps it is Newt that needs to drop out.

If the Republican Party “progressive” Establishment cannot shake off the Tea Party revolt and regain CONTROL of what they consider to be their party, they will surely destroy it.
They would much rather see America crushed under an Obama fascist Caliphate than to have a true Constitutional Christian Conservative have a chance at the Presidency.
They are seriously determined to see to it that a Reagan class presidency will never happen again.
I know I’m fussing a lot of fellow Republicans off here, but if you doubt my studied observation...

Many of us conservatives have left the GOP behind and put their support in to the Tea Party movement...me included. Bachmann, IMHO, was the only candidate that best exhibited conservatism in the race but she could not gain much support.
The left, the media and the moderate (read RINOs) are pushing Romney. Open primaries are another huge problem...letting the Rats vote as well doom our conservative chances of putting forward a conservative nominee.
