The pianist Andras Schiff has announced that he will never return to his Hungarian motherland. Interviewed in Tagespiegel, he accuses the Victor Orban government of right-wing thuggery, racism, antisemitism and dangerous neo-fascism.
*********************************************************
Schiff came under personal attack in Hungary after he published an open letter a year back in the Washington Post, denouncing state discrimination against the minority Roma. He now calls the country not particularly European and is particularly incensed at the appointment of two openly fascist directors at one of Budapests most important theatres.

Classical Ping
Roma = Gypsies = some of the most nefarious people. Likely to steal the plaster off the ceiling.
Then let him go live among the Roma.
If the Hungarian Government is Truly and Avowedly Fascist, then Good for the Pianist for taking a stand.
However, if they are merely NOT leftists, and so “Fascist” in the mind of this individual, then he is being a jerk.
Does anyone know what the true situation is?
Incidentally, Hungary owes much of the character of its Classical Music to the Roma people (Gypsies). Most of the Great Composers, such as Liszt, had no problem giving them a “hat tip”.
“As God is my witness, I’ll never be in Hungary again!”
Just as a lot of moonbats consider the GOP to be Fascist.
Fascist = Anyone who disagrees with a Liberal
Also, anyone who protests being conned by socialist corruption.
Subtle.
“he accuses the Victor Orban government of right-wing thuggery, racism, antisemitism and dangerous neo-fascism”.
Sounds to me to be too typically tea party plastering by a paper hanging sob. Anyone have examples of right-wing thuggery, racism, antisemitism, etc which are lefty examples if ever there were some. The WP isn’t exactly an example either. Why didn’t he write the Washington Times. They might have been able to guide his hand. That said, like others on the thread I would really like to know from the inside, what’s up.
Any knowledge of the current Hungarian leadership?
That’s a good one!
I hate anti-semitism, or any form of true bigotry, and I don't know the real situation in Hungary at this time, but I absolutely agree with your point. The left, including the true communists and Marxist revolutionaries on the left, benefited tremendously when they were able to discredit any form of concern over covert communist plotting in America as ‘McCarthyism’. We need to do the same with regards this repeatedly used ploy to characterize anyone to the political right of Mao as a fascist. We need to label it as a divisive attempt to stifle freedom and suppress speech and free-thinking. In fact we should borrow their terms and label it as ‘leftist McCarthyism’, and/or leftist witch hunts; carried out by the ‘secret police of the left’. Heck, why not start referring to them as the Gestapo of the left, or the new KGB?
Fascist is too strong of a word, and used incorrectly far too often.
Authoritarian government; that’s a little closer to accurately describing the situation. That being said, Fidesz is not Jobbik, which is a more-or-less fascist, racist, and openly anti-Semitic political party.
I don’t have a high opinion of Orban......Supreme Court packing is wrong, censoring freedom of the press is wrong, as is such gimmicks as eliminating public pensions, forcing everyone to go to private pensions, and then NATIONALIZING the aforementioned private pensions (which he did in 2011, IIRC) in order to balance the budget. Among other shenanigans.
As the historian John Lukacs recounts of the Hungarians, the people drove the luxury limo before the communist came to power, drove the luxury limo while the communists were in power. And they drove them after the fall of communism. Something similar with musicians who are beholden to class of wealth for their survival.
In their youth, Bartok and Kodaly scoured the countryside for folk tunes. With considerable idiosyncratic stylistic development, these became the basis of their music.

"Eh, what's up, Doc? Who...? Franz Liszt? Never heard of him... Wrong number."
European socialists like to call anyone who is to the right of them “fascists”. He’s a “fascist” to these people because he’s reducing spending/ benefits, which would obviously adversely effect the non-working, benefit-leeching Roma (gypsies).
