Following his recent wins in Iowa and New Hampshire, it isn't a stretch to say that Mitt Romney is being widely hailed as the presumptive Republican nominee for the presidency.
While almost every GOP presidential candidate has experienced at least a temporary surge in the polls, Romney, who has been endorsed by high-profile members of the Republican establishment, has bounced back every time, putting down firestorms by Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry and Herman Cain.
As the primary race shifts to South Carolina, Romney continues to lead the pack. Although both Rick Santorum and Rep. Ron Paul experienced significant surges following the Iowa caucuses, Romney effectively only has one real challenger left: Newt Gingrich.
Romney super-PAC v. Gingrich super-PAC
Gingrich may have fallen to the sidelines after disappointing finishes in Iowa and New Hampshire, but he is still the only candidate with enough financial support to even compete on Romney's scale -- and the Romney campaign knows it.

Didn’t Santorum spend about 1/100th what Romney did and achieved better results?
It’s amazing what you can do when people actually like you and you don’t have to pay them to like you.
Santorum decorum is decent and pure
but Santorum will bore ‘em.
Of that, I am sure.
Conservatives have fractured for a second election cycle, with different factions demanding their way or disaster.
It’s working out beautifully for the moderates. They’ll settle for Romney or Obama.
And so will we all.
Gingrich or Obama—you decide.
He didn't do so well despite his encyclopedic knowledge of the economy.
“Didnt Santorum spend about 1/100th what Romney did and achieved better results?”
If we are talking about Iowa, yes! And after Iowa and New Hampshire, and yesterday’s value voters endorsement, it’s still looking like a Romney/Santorum ticket!
It’s very discouraging to read the attacks on Gingrich at FR. I don’t stop in here as often anymore.
It’s clear that Newt is the best candidate, against Romney now and Obama later. It’s clear no one else has any chance of beating Romney. Yet conservatives are being enemy-of-the-good perfectionists. They’ll get Romney for their pains, and then they’ll get 4 more years of Obama.
“Exactly...evangelical leaders have made a wise choice in backing Santorum,..”
Yes, at least the evangelicals, by backing Santorum, will have representation on the Romney-led ticket.
And we need to help OUT to “Tea Party” Romney! J.S.
I’m with Newt and will be voting for him very soon. I have seen how he tears apart Willard. He will do the same to Bammy Boy. No quarter. It will be hilarious watching an old guy get the better of that America hating punk in the White House.
If Willard runs all you will hear about is Bain Capital screwing workers and the “racist” Mormon church. Axelrod’s strategy is based on running against the spaced out Mormon moneygrubber. Axelrod has no Newt strategy. All Newt’s dirty laundry has been aired. Bammy vs Newt will be a battle of ideologies.
Succinct, poetic and true all in one. Your words are true, b9!
So even though Paul has plenty of money, supporters and standing in the polls & elections, he is not a contender because he is not taking establishment PAC money??
I’ve seen Freepers note this several times but $$ is just one resource. Time is another - remember that Santormum probably spent 100:1 hours in Iowa vs. Romney. The unfortunate fact for Santorum backers is that $$ (especially other people’s) is a scalable resource while personal candidate time never gets any greater than 24 hours in a day.
You said it, m'lady.
It occured to me last night that this race is all about the money. That is why the GOP establishment is supporting Romney. He may be the only one in the race that will have the funds to compete with Obama. Isn’t it alwsy about the money? Whores...

“And after Iowa and New Hampshire, and yesterdays value voters endorsement, its still looking like a Romney/Santorum ticket!”
Value voter met specifically to find an Anti-Romney. Putting a real conservative on the VP slot will not work. Also, I for one, would lose any respect for someone that would “work with” Romney to get elected as the VP nominee. That would be a horrible sell out and a slap in my face as a moral conservative.
I cannot be pragmatic about a Romeny run. I don’t want him in office anymore than Obama. I think that if he gets the nomination (regardless of who his VP pick is - to include Sarah) I will not vote in the general election...I will stay home for the first time in my life. I “believe” that many others share that view with me. I know many consider this “self destructive” but I can only go so far in voting for the lesser of two evils.
