The is the first in a multi-part series of articles exposing the lies and misinformation behind legislation mandating the replacement of incandescent light bulbs with potentially unsafe compact florescent light (CFL) bulbs.
-------
According to provisions of legislation passed by congress in 2007, the 100-watt incandescent bulb was to be off the shelves this January, followed by a phase-out of the 75-watt version in January 2013 and the 60- and 40-watt versions in January 2014. But last month congress granted consumers a reprieve by including in its spending bill a measure delaying enforcement of the ban until the end of the 2012.
----------------------
According to Wattsworks.com, Breaking a single CFL bulb in a room can result in mercury vapor levels 300 times in excess of what the EPA has established as safe for prolonged exposure. Serious health effects are associated with mercury exposure. Unborn and young children, elderly and those with weakened health are particularly vulnerable.

Breaking a single CFL bulb
I’m surprised the sanitation union isn’t more concerned for their union workers who pickup this trash.
We have a Democrat Administration is why they are not saying anything. If it were a Republican Administration they would be screaming like banshees.
The overlords won’t be happy with the CFL bulbs until people start suffering and (in their eyes hopefully) dying from the mercury exposure.
I disagree. This should have been repealed instantly when the new house was elected. Instead a watered down semi-defunding. It couldn't get out of a Republican-controlled committee for months. Republicans are afraid of minorities (majorities don't seem to have an influence in them) and the enviro-whackos are just one of those feared minorities. To me this is a key indicator of "Republican-failing" leadership.
Why should the Sanitation union workers be worried? If you break a CFL bulb you are supposed to call a HAZMAT team.
Awaiting another law firm commercial....if you’ve been harmed by CFL bulbs, contact so & so!
They are all made up hysterical exaggerations.
If you want to waste money, energy, and time, go ahead and continue to be stupid and use incandescent light bulbs. You are allowed to be ignorant in this country.
ff
....and yet it was a Republican Administration that signed the bill into law.
...and another Republican, Fred Upton, (R)ino Michigan, who pushed this provision through Congress as part of George W.’s “energy” bill.
Now the asshat Upton is on the super committee in Congress.
If you break a CFL bulb you are supposed to call a HAZMAT team
Last weekend on a local call in radio show a female called said she had a CFL "explode".
She call the poison center at a area hospital asking about the danger. The center said "We don't know but we will check it out and get back to you.
Within a short period of time the poison control center did call the woman back and tell her that she needed a HAZMAT team.
The female caller said the clean up cost was $2,300 for one bulb - one room.
Breaking a single CFL bulb in a room can result in mercury vapor levels 300 times in excess of what the EPA has established as safe for prolonged exposure....Read that. What the EPA has established. If they established that oxygen at 1% above what they FEEL is unsafe would you go for it? Mercury is heavier than lead, it does not stay in the breathable region for a long time, and does not off gas until heated a lot more than 120 watts will heat it. This is all BS. Break all the CFLs and florescent bulbs you might run across in a ten year period and you are NOT in a dangerous situation. Our main problem should be where did government find the power to say we have to use these crappy products? Next thing (IN 20 YEARS OR SO) they will will find everyone has reduced ocular powers and mandate everyone must purchase enhanced sight goggles or something else they can make a profit on.
agenda first.. Wonder how much money the insider traders in Congress made of this deal.
I don’t like government mandates but that’s another issue. I’m wondering why we don’t hear the same screaming about the florescent tubes that have been in use for decades.
Back in the stone age of my youth I was a garbage man for a while. We used to dump whole dumpsters full of the long tubes in the back of the garbage truck twice a week on days when we picked up at the local power company.
More evidence of the Republican Party and the Socialist Party,a/k/a Democrat Party working hand in glove.
Glenn Beck celebrates earth day by breaking a CFL.

Crappy video but in this one Glenn Holds hostages with a CFL.

you are supposed to call a HAZMAT team
I’m sure a lot of people aren’t aware of that.
Yes, we are stupid for using a light bulb that costs less than a dollar, puts out better light, and does not cause health issues when broken.
