Republican presidential candidate Gov. Rick Perry of Texas continued to fight for votes Saturday, squeezing in a quick morning talk in Mount Pleasant before a Fox News forum.
Perry, who is polling in fifth place, stopped by Pages Okra Grill on Coleman Boulevard, emphasizing that hes the only candidate in the race who doesnt have a Wall Street or Washington, D.C., mentality.
If elected, Perry said, he would support a 20 percent flat tax for all corporations and individuals. Corporate lobbyists will hate that, but tough, said Perry. Im tired of Main Street paying for all of these corporate folks who find corporate (tax) loopholes.
He also underscored the need to tap all energy resources in the U.S. and hammered President Barack Obamas incentives for green energy. I dont have a problem with green energy, but let the market decide. Dont force it from Washington, D.C.
Perry also talked about veterans issues, even suggesting that veterans who are 100 percent disabled should not be required to pay income taxes.
Perry told the crowd: If you have my back next week, Ill have your back for the next four years.
Then, in a "This Week" exclusive, comedian Stephen Colbert is creating a stir with his latest effort to explore a presidential run in his home state of South Carolina. And he is shining a spotlight on the shadowy super PAC organizations playing a key role in the current election battle, as they flood the airwaves with negative political ads.
Colbert comes to "This Week" to explain his campaign stunt, and whether secretive super PACs are distorting the political process.
Plus, "This Week" powerhouse roundtable with ABC's George Will and Cokie Roberts, ABC News senior political correspondent Jonathan Karl, the Wall Street Journal's Peggy Noonan, and New York Times columnist and Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman debate the class war being waged in the GOP."
It got a HUGE applause.
Yes, and he asks that at many of his campaign stops.
But I think he needs to update...believe it’s more like 5 trillion because it just gets worse every day.
Perry was terrific on Huckabee forum Sat. night (watched during Bronco’s sad game). He got tons of applause, sounded very strong and decisive and I’ll bet won over lots of voters. His best debate/forum yet — even Huckabee said so.
Santorum looked and sounded like a yuppie trying to appear grown up.
Barf.
Talk about handing to the federal government yet *ANOTHER* way to tax us.
Sure, you can argue till you’re blue in the face that this is *SUPPOSED* to replace the income tax... but I’m not arguing that.
I’m arguing that once the federal government taxes you in some way, it remains a valid way to tax in the eyes of the politicians and a sizeable chunk of the electorate. And you’d add a federal sales tax into that mix.
Which means, at some future point in time, there *WILL* be a call to have both.
His closing comments seemed unprepared. Maybe it was the delivery.
Perry by far had the most to offer — just as he has as the sitting governor of the 13th largest economy in the world — long term executive of the state that sees 1300 (up from 1000) people daily moving here from other states.
While Texas has filled over a million jobs (don’t know the count lately, l.5 million?), California has lost a million jobs.

I am so sorry I missed this! I didn’t even know about it until I saw a clip this morning on Fox.
Perry stands head and shoulders over the rest of the candidates. People should be flocking to support him.
Okay, I just complained about missing Perry’s performance on the Huckabee forum, but I checked my pings and I have video.
Thank you, CW!
Yes, I saw Huckabee in an interview today say how well Perry connected with audience.
Also, it will be replayed tonight at 8 p.m. eastern time.
Author Eric Metaxas: Gingrich, Perry Should Drop OutNow [Santorum spoke next at breakfast]......"This is the last exit before the bridge, Mr. Metaxas said in an interview later. Theyve been dividing the vote and so if they dont do this now, they will harm the country because they cant hang on to the bitter end.
Bump and prayers for a Perry victory!
Thanks for that information.
Since you are a fair tax supporter, I'll appeal to you to be fair.
I've looked at both ideas very closely. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Neither is perfect, Although a consumption tax looks better from an ideological standpoint it brings with it a number of practical problems that I have never seen anyone adequately deal with, no the least is the double taxation on savings. Similarly the flat tax has its own problems; mainly it is still a tax on incomes, and as such could be open to tinkering over decades.
The truth is I would be happy with either as an alternative to what we have now. What I DON'T want is BOTH.
And here is where I ask you to be fair; there is no way you can fairly call Governor Perry's plan "tinkering with the tax code". That is so far from the truth it does not help the argument along. But sure, no legislation can bind a future Congress - only a Constitutional Amendment can do that - so your critique of the flat tax proposal can be wielded just as easily at the "Fair Tax": A future Congress could add rules, restrictions, exclusions and so on, and could even add reinstate a tax on incomes.
Now, that's a development that neither of us want.
So, push your favorite plan, no problem, but please do so in a way that adds to the debate.
Thanks shield.
