A lady asked about folks getting laid off late in their life but not yet old enough to retire. Santorum actually blew it off by saying that the jobs needed to go to the young and that it is good that her friend (58) who was laid off had an IRA that she could cash out to start her own business. Then RS went on to say how nice SC is and that he and is wife love to come there for vacation. (now, if we think about it, the lady who was laid off probably can’t afford to travel for vacation. This shows how out of touch his answer is to the plight of the older people being laid off prior to age of retirement. Add to that the discussion about raising the age of retirement and that spells disaster.)
I listened to that exchange. Romney had no answer so just shifted his comment in mid-sentence to something else.
