(Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has opened a wide lead over his rivals in the South Carolina primary election race, trouncing Newt Gingrich and gaining momentum in his march toward the party's nomination, a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows.
Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, could all but quash his rivals' presidential aspirations with a victory in South Carolina on January 21 after winning the first state-by-state nominating contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.
Voters in South Carolina - who have favored Republicans in nine of the last 10 presidential elections - appear to have shrugged off attacks on Romney by rivals who accuse him of killing jobs as a private equity executive for Bain Capital in the 1990s.
The poll showed 37 percent of South Carolina Republican voters back Romney. Congressman Ron Paul and former Senator Rick Santorum tied for second place with 16 percent support.
Gingrich, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, has fallen far back after holding a strong lead in South Carolina in December. He was in fourth place at 12 percent in the Reuters/Ipsos poll.

I listen to Rush almost every day. I have never heard him endorse or campaign for Mitt. I think he likes Santorum, but doubts he could win the general election. Attacking Romney by attacking capitalism and big business was a big mistake by Newt IMO. That’s the liberal/leftie thing, not a GOP thing.
I will continue to support the one man that I believe in my heart and head can turn this country around and set the course for my children and grandchildren to have a better future........ that man is Newt Gingrich.
Or David God uses many people.
Cool... thank you.
Sarah Palin had David’s annointing.
Still does, should she choose to apprehend it.
Romney will win the primary, but will not win the general.
For Homeland Security....I am forming a Company of Men...
Wonderful photo and your posts rock!
GO NEWT!
God be with Newt Gingrich!
Is S.C. an open primary state as well? Why does the GOP allow open primaries to begin with? Talk about instant suicide.
Fact is, this primary system is a sham and I will not vote for Romney.
GOP = not called the stupid party without good reason.
I like Newt, but will vote for Romney if I have to. I can’t watch BO and the Mooch turn hard left and not have voted against it. Anyone but BO, Valerie Commie Jarrett and the Mooch. They have got to go no matter who it is or our country is lost. Not voting is a vote for the Communists.
Ooooh.... the dreaded CAPS!
You're failing, Ben. I've been posting Santorum's abysmal voting record for a couple of days now, and all you do in response is post snarky comments, cheer leading, or navel-gazing theories about why you think Santorum has a ghost of a chance of winning this thing.
Your guy's (real) polling numbers are reverting to trend, and this is causing you to desperately scream out for support for his candidacy.
Face the facts. They are what they are. He's not coming back, because most conservatives have never supported the guy all along, and he's never given most of us a solid reason to give him a second look, or to change our minds about him.
You can keep waving your pom poms for him, but it's doing no good. He never had a winning base of support to begin with, and he's gaining no traction now. This race is realistically down to two men -- Romney and Gingrich. Period.
Throw your support to one or the other. That is all.
I can't see it falling out any other way short of direct intervention by Jesus Christ.
We need to support whoever is the GOP candidate.
Newt needs to start going after BO again and hard. That’s what pushed him up so high early on. That’s what people want to hear. Calling BO a radical and explaining what he has done will get Newt the votes he needs.
You'd think so, but I've posted Santorum's voting record to that guy several times, and he just keeps coming back like an undead zombie.
Apparently, some folks (like libs) are impervious to facts.
I agree. We may not get perfect, not even close, but we have to stop Obama. I’m afraid of a Romney candidacy though for other reasons. He did a crap job of defending himself on the Bain issue, what’s he going to do when O hits him. The other piece of this is that the press is busy defending Romney right now because they want him to be our nominee. But they will turn as soon as he’s nominated and there will be no defense just hit after hit.
I’d rather have Newt because he’ll fight back and fight hard. So I’m praying it’s not Romney because I fear we’ll lose.
Newt managed to accomplish the seemingly impossible: Making Mitt look like a strong conservative by attacking capitalism.
Newt was always self-destructive, never more so than here.
