UC system banning smoking from all campuses
SF Chron ^ | 1/13/12 | Erin Allday

Posted on 01/13/2012 11:15:06 PM PST by Drango

The University of California is banning cigarettes and all other tobacco products from its campuses over the next two years, in a move designed to both protect nonsmokers from secondhand smoke and prevent young people from developing the bad habit. Students and staff alike will be prohibited from smoking anywhere on a UC campus - including outdoor spaces, parking lots and private residences. There won't be any designated smoking areas.

But a major benefit, they hope, will be an overall reduction in smoking among those who work or study on the campuses. "Our young students who come here as freshmen, who don't smoke but come to college and start experimenting, maybe they won't choose to smoke now.

~ "In other states, most young people start smoking in their teens, but in California, that start date is getting older. This policy will help protect the next generation from suffering the horrible impacts of tobacco." California has some of the most stringent antismoking laws in the country, and has among the lowest rates of smoking. About 12 percent of Californians smoke, compared with 19.6 percent of people nationwide, according to state and national public health reports. Smoking rates are even lower in the UC system - about 10 percent of employees and about 8 percent of students smoke regularly, according to a UC Office of the President report. Another 11 percent of students report that they smoke occasionally, or less than once a month.

. young people can stop smoking, or never start smoking, before they reach their late 20s, they will be unlikely to ever develop the habit as older adults, said Dr. Stanton Glantz, director of UCSF's Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education. "Virtually nobody starts smoking after age 24 or 25," Glantz said.

Have they banned charcoal grills, yet? Cooking oil?, Gas grills etc.?

Charcoal barbecuing, or barbecuing (or cooking) in any form which produces smoke produces carcinogens in the form of smoke, including in your kitchen,in your house!!!!!!.

....Also at the beach, park, picnic area, backyard, your kitchen...! (shall they all be banned?). It also includes campfires, wood stoves, pellet stoves and any form of fire that produces smoke, including pan frying anything!!!!!!.

Charcoal (wood smoke in any form) contains creosote which is 100 times more carcinogenic than the small fire area delivered by a cigarette, cigar, or pipe?

If smoking sucks, then smoke from cooking anytime, anywhere (principles, genuine principles, are universal), which gives some of us and your children asthma, should be banned. Do you eat only raw veggies?

This subject is another example of prejudice or personal preference pretending to be thought.

Do not smoke, as if anyone does not yet know this, but do not package personal prejudices this way. The problem is not smoking but a government telling you what, when, where how....

Oh by the way. Lack of exercise, eating trans-fats, junk food, (including burgers, fries etc. abuse of booze etc.) and too many other things will kill you. ( We are all going to die!)

"...in a move designed to both protect nonsmokers from secondhand smoke and prevent young people from developing the bad habit."

When prohibition is done to prevent bad habits, why don't they also outlaw Liberalism? Obviously they are already too intoxicated with Liberalism to perceive their malady.

If the women are smoking, you’re not doing it right.

Warm them up first.

...but it was before anyone had ever heard of marijuana.

Last month, TCM featured William Powell, and an early '30s movie had him as a jewelry thief giving marijuana cigarettes out at a party so as to allow him to do his thing while the society types were stoned.

Then the movie industry code came into place...

My first days on campus, Big Tobacco was pushing mint flavored Skoal.

I knew someone would thump me on that statement as I wrote it, but it was in the wee hours of the morning, so I let it stand. I should have said something like “before nice educated people would even dream of using marijuana”. Let’s just say that the only people you ever heard of using MJ in 1956 were members of Mexican gangs — not nice, young men and women studying for a degree at the University of California, Berkeley! LOL. After all, Robert Mitchum had done hard time for smoking MJ and was being black balled by the movie industry. It was a subject that was not discussed in polite company.

How quickly that changed.

I see our FR resident smoking Nazi statist Drango has posted another glorious anti-smoking article. Gotta love those big-government types who want to stamp out freedom.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
