In 1965, the Turtles had just scored a hit with a Bob Dylan tune, and they picked up a Phil Sloan tune and got their second hit.

P. F. Sloan recorded it himself a year later, and it sounds totally different. Here it’s a personal song, the lament of an outsider rather than a protest. Sloan’s performance turns it into a masterpiece.
