The Ron Paul Paradox: GOP Questions His Impact
NPR ^ | Jan. 13, 2012 | David Welna

Four years ago, Texas Rep. Ron Paul finished fifth in the New Hampshire presidential primary with just under 8 percent of the vote.

On Tuesday, he got nearly 23 percent of the vote in the New Hampshire primary, finishing second to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in the Republican contest. That came a week after Paul's third-place finish in the Iowa caucuses.

Paul has done better than any Republican presidential contender not named Romney, and his success is part of the buzz at the Republican National Committee's winter meeting in New Orleans, which runs through Saturday.

Some are surprised by his showing. Some are happy about his success. And some are worried that Paul's allure — he's attracting support from outside the Republican Party by advocating everything from legalizing marijuana to immediately withdrawing U.S. forces from Afghanistan — could influence him to eventually consider a third-party bid for the White House.

Not that it matters to NPR, but the RNC is not meeting next week in New Orleans... it is the Southern Republican Leadership Conference. Wrong Paul normally floods the convention with his supporters and wins the "straw poll."

From the article, an example of a truly dumbass GOPer: Carolyn McLarty, a committeewoman from Oklahoma, says she is holding out hope that Paul won't make an independent run. "He is a Republican. He's always run as a Republican," says McLarty, before correcting herself. "Well, no, he hasn't always run as a Republican. But lately he has, so hopefully he won't take off on his own like that."

This from the comments section, sums up the mission of Wrong Paul:

.....As a Democrat, I am rooting for this nut to be the face of the GOP. I hope he gets enough delegates so he can make a prime time speech during the convention. That could taint the Republican brand for years.

Ron Paul 2012-end the GOP

Dr. Dipstick must not be allowed to make a speech at the convo. I don’t know who makes that decision, I’m not so sure it’s the delegates but even so we don’t want a bunch of Paulbot delegates there booing whenever the military is mentioned and holding up signs about hemp and whatnot.

Why is it a surprise? Paul always does well when democrats can cross over and vote in GOP primaries/caucuses.

"Paulbot delegates there ... holding up signs about hemp"

Look on the bright side... we'll have celebrities like Woody Harrelson at the convention.

The ONE thing the RNC should get from this entire exercise is that the GOP rank and file are outraged with what they have had to endure from the GOP leadership. Bullet points:

1) We want someone who will NOT “go along to get along” with 50+ years of leftist Democrat rule in Washington, that has horribly bollixed up our country while the Republican leadership watched. We want you to ERADICATE much of what the Democrats have done, NOT JUST MAINTAIN THE STATUS QUO.

“Just because the Democrats pushed it through DOES NOT mean it is set in concrete! More than half of the US government is unconstitutional. GET RID OF IT.”

2) Quit being afraid of the Democrats. Don’t just have a static defense against them, but TEAR DOWN what they have built. The Democrats treat you like dogs when they are in power, but when you are in power, again and again, you *insist* on treating them fairly and not ending what they have started.

3) Remember how embarrassed the Republican controlled US senate were that they had to try Bill Clinton? Why was that? Why couldn’t they have done their job and convicted him, and removed him from office? In what fantasy are they “too good” to sit in judgment over the ruination of the office of the presidency by a scoundrel?

If Republicans controlled both the House and Senate right now, they should be impeaching and removing Obama’s Attorney General, all his “Czars”, and all his recess appointments. If they are too spineless to do that, then they need to look for employment elsewhere.

4) George W. Bush about destroyed American freedom by creating a huge police state apparatus against US! WE THE PEOPLE are not the enemy. Muslim extremists ARE THE ENEMY.
Republicans need to oppress THE ENEMY, NOT THE PEOPLE. Is that too difficult a concept?

“Tear down this police state. America has over 100 federal police agencies. We need maybe 6. America also has a huge intelligence apparatus, 16 gigantic agencies. USE THEM AGAINST NON-AMERICANS. NOT US.”

Is this too hard a message for the RNC to absorb?

“If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals — if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is.”

Fighting Paulbots and romneybots is noble work.

I am already prepared for the possibility of mitt locking everything up within a month.

somebody needs to compete against RONpaulie in every state thru June. Don’t matter if it’s newt, Rick-S or Rick-P. I’ve heard that NEWT is determined to fight on til June regardless of results.

“You and I are told we must choose between a left or right, but I suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down. Up to man’s age-old dream—the maximum of individual freedom consistent with order — or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. “

Perry? I know he’s got the $$$$$ but he’s an afterthought in the polls, far behind the other Rick and Newt. He was a fool for not quiting after Iowa.

if Perry wants to stay in, he should pack it up and go to NV, CO, AZ and try to compete where RS and NG aren’t campaigning yet.

If RS and NG drop out, Perry could serve the purpose of stomping out some of the ronPaul hysteria. ronPaul could get 35% of the vote in later primaries in a 2-man race with MittR. This should not be allowed to happen.

Interesting idea but he’s making his stand in dixie and nothing will change his mind!! And when dixie gives him a level of support almost as anemic as Iowa and NH did I suspect he will then quit leaving us with RS and Newt.

He's getting a lot of youth support, but not because of drugs. These are people stepping into low paying jobs (if they are 'lucky') and looking at huge debts just getting started. Housing prices have been supported by spending money they don't have, and those conservative enough to not be Obama voters realize they are going to get stuck with the tab.

As a result, they will support anyone who promises to reduce the coming bill by slashing the size of the government, (a government many rightly perceive as having spent their future on failed policies and having cost them jobs as well).

It isn't the dope that is swaying most of the youth vote, it is the economy. (Where have we heard the "It's the economy...", thingy before

Now That is hitting the point Exactly!
Repubican (leadership?) are you reading this? America is bleeding to death and so far the only diffrence I see between Obomney oops I mean Romney and Obama is that the bleeding might slow down with Romney. (But it won’t)
