Quelle horreur! Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney has been skewered in a new political attack ad - for speaking French.
The ad, released by rival Newt Gingrich, seeks to draw unflattering parallels between Mr Romney and another Massachusetts politician, John Kerry.
Entitled The French Connection, it features a clip of Mr Romney talking in French when he ran the Winter Olympics.

I think Newts starting to melt down. Newt's really a fool. It's not the fault of the language that Kerry might be associated with it or know it to some degree. So did William F. Buckley, and other truly educated people. Willard is hardly my choice, but any knowledge he has of the French language is to his credit.
And Obozo is still thinking about trying to learn Austrian.

The report I read said the bull was in the EU, news media screwed up, I looked it up and it was taken by the marshals in fla. Cannot believe everything you read. It was big enough to make the trip, so maybe it was over there at one time.

Make sure you look for “Holidays in Hell” as opposed to his newest book, “Holidays in Heck.” Both are quite good but the first is definitely edgier and funnier.

Can some kind FRiend explain this angle and how it will be or should be effective? There's a considerable amount of ill will towards the French over here -- much of it resulting from their attitude over the Iraq invasion. You might have heard that the Congressional cafeteria subsequently renamed french fries as Freedom fries.
The antipathy goes back even to WWII where they surrendered to the Germans without a fight and the English speaking world had to save their butts.
The feeling is not so deep that it will have a huge effect though it will cement Romney in the minds of money as an elitist -- which is the purpose.

Effroyable! Shocking that a President of the United States should be conversant in another international language!

I’m from MA. I’m very familiar with the worthless politicians from here. I’m glad to see someone finally attacking Romney. He’s worthless and will doom us all.

Great ad.
If for no other reason, from this thread alone..... it is apparent that it gets under the skin of the Romney supporters and Newt haters.

Pandering to the lowest common denominator in a bid for votes? Brilliant, Newt.

I’m sure someone will be influenced by this ad. I find it strange that this is all he has. Quite weak IMHO.

Amen...the ‘French’ bit is only ten seconds of the ad. Wasn’t it great to see Dukakis and Kerry again..?

You might have heard that the Congressional cafeteria subsequently renamed french fries as Freedom fries. I seem to recall a few 'French bashing' threads around here in those days...

Give it up. France is nominally Catholic anymore and it not the fault of the Mormons. It's the Catholic Church's dismal lack of Catholic teaching there and elsewhere that has decimated Europe.
I thought you wrote at least two farewell posts, anyway?
