A villager in provincial Russia has caused a national scandal after finding 79 Kalashnikov assault rifles in crates that he bought to use as firewood, Russian media reported on Friday.
A truck driver was supposed to take the crates for disposal from the factory in the central city of Izhevsk where Kalashnikovs are manufactured, but instead sold them to the unnamed villager, thinking they were empty.
The man who had hoped to use the wood as fuel for his stove called the police and an investigation was launched amid concerns about security at the nationally-renowned Izhmash arms factory, local police said.

No kidding. But, I'm sure we both would do the right thing and call...uh...the police.
Sorry, this news is all a mistake. These guns were actually found to have been supplied by the US BATF as part of Operation Fast and Furious!
Volvograd- Russian authorities on Wednesday impounded 79 Kalashnikov assault rifles found on a British-registered cargo truck ultimately destined for Shanghai, China, officials said.
The Russian spokesman, Ainotov Thornokovskiinsideski stated that the cargo truck traveled from the north German port of Emden with a Dutch driver using a Finnish ID and bearing Lichstenstein license plates on a Japanese Toyota truck.
AK-47 Kalashnikov and MP-44 Sturmgewehr. Any resemblance is purely coincidental! (They say.) Mikhail Kalashnikov has a museum devoted to "his" designs?
And just like "Ivan", I'd tell them all about how I came into possession of 82 79 Kalishnikovs.
79 AKs. Hmm...that’s litterally an odd number to find crated. Care to bet a few were stashed away prior to calling the cops?
How do you say “Fast and Furious” in Ruskie-speak?
Uh...call the police...choke...is right...right after I hide the dogs. But I have no phone, no dogs and need quality iron for other projects. Send more crates please.
In most other countries people find Kalashnikovs, but in Soviet Russia Kalashnikovs find you!
If there are 80 to a crate, that driver may have a problem when the cops search his stuff.
I’ve gotta order me some firewood. From Russia.
A reasonable assumption, that stuff destined for disposal can be disposed of. If the AKs failed inspection for defects, one would think that they would be taken apart and the good parts re-used, rather than "disposed".
I suspect that the guns were intended to be diverted to criminal gangs, and the driver will be "disappeared".
I can't expect the driver didn't know that the crates had something in them. The people at the factory that loaded the truck surely had to know that the crates were not empty.
There is something seriously wrong with this story. People who handled those crates knew that there was something in them and they were not empty firewood.
Quite likely the firearms were intended to be sold illegally, were loaded on a truck and someone took the wrong truck to delivery “empty crates” to the farmer that reported things.
“someone took the wrong truck”
Sounds right to me. Rooskie mafia will not be pleaased.
If I found that many AKs, I’d have wood! ;>)
Some of those Ruskie boys are built like tanks!
Kalashnikov studied firearms from all over the world when researching his design. Form follows function, so it is not unreasonable that the MP-44 and the AK-47 look much alike. If you want to see another resemblance, just look at the safety on a model 8 Remington (Browning designed early semi-auto) and the Kalashnikov!

I can’t see that much in common with the exception of mag. shape.
Add ‘38 and ‘40 Tokarev SVT semi-auto rifles to the picture make them shorter, add that same mag and pistol grip and voila, you may claim Germans modeled after that.
AK has much more in common with these older rifles as well.
