George Lucas: Hollywood Wouldn't Back My Film About Tuskegee Airmen Due to All Black Cast
NewsBusters ^ | January 11, 2012 | Noel Sheppard

Star Wars creator George Lucas said Monday that Hollywood studios refused to back his new film Red Tails - about World War II's Tuskegee Airmen - because the cast was all black.

...

Hollywood balked given the message Lucas was trying to convey.

“I wanted to make it inspirational for teenaged boys. I wanted to show that they have heroes, they’re real American heroes, they’re patriots that helped to make the country what it is today. And it’s not Glory where you have a lot of white officers running these guys into cannon fodder. It’s like a real, they were real heroes.”

And Hollywood said, "No."

Just remember that the next time some movie star or film director calls Republicans or members of the Tea Party racist.

You know, it could just be that Hollywood didn’t want to back a film from George Lucas. Not that I don’t want to believe to worst of Hollywood.

They made this movie 20 years ago and I recall the cast being all black. Could it be that Lucas' version was garbage and no one wanted to waste dwindling funds on it? Hollyweird is having a rough go of it lately with all the big budget bombs.

BULLCRAP...with the amount of money he made from the Star Wars series and the Old Republic game sales, he has the money to do so. These crybaby rich libtards make me wanna puke.

Someone last Christmas bought the Old republic pc game for one of my nephews for $50 THEN later found out it was by subscription taht you have to pay extra for! At least World of Warcraft makers won’t BS you with their games.

Shouldn’t this film have an “affirmative action” and “diversity” plan? Gee, even Notre Dame had a black leprechaun :-)

They already did a TV movie about this years ago.

Judging by the previews, the CGI looks faker than when they did Pearl Harbor. Last time I checked, P-51 Mustangs couldn't do back flips.

I am so jaded that when I saw they were making this movie, I figured it was just another way to make our Black President look good through the sacrifices of those brave Airmen.

I hate to admit it, but after I saw HBO was coming out with their Sarah Palin hit piece movie “Game Changer”, I am beginning to think it's all part of a Vast Left Wing Conspiracy. Then I remembered we're dealing with the same old Hollywood propagandists.

Is that what they told you, George, or did you guess their motives on your own?

I can guess several other possible reasons -

This movie has already been done ("The Tuskegee Airmen"). Maybe it's too soon for a remake?

How compelling was the script? Some poorly written movies do get made, but many don't.

Some directors want control of every aspect of the film - casting, script, editing, whatever - in the name of "artistic freedom". Some financiers don't like writing a blank check with no control over the process or the final product.

Then there are financial considerations - marketing, release stategies, video rights, even the director's salary...

Oh, come on, Mr. Lucas. Your script has too much story and not enough message. Increase the number of lynching scenes. Have the actors refer to “Mississippi” more. Make sure that all the white actors frequently spit something brown. Southern Americans should appear only in hoods, preferably while also in church. Show several scenes of inter-racial sex. Make the South the bad guys and the North (or the Germans) the good guys. Demonstrate that fighting the Krauts was easy compared to living in Alabama in 1943. Then we can talk.

Let’s not forget the real scandal here.

Remember when Air Force one scared lower Manhattan half to death by buzzing it unannounced? The photos showed AF-1 with two red-tailed Alabama Air National Guard F-16’s accompanying it.

At the time it came out that there was a movie in the works “Red Tails” about the Tuskeegee Airmen.

Can there be any doubt this whole thing was to set up a glorious shot for the closing credits?

They should make a movie about the blacks that served in the German army in WW2. There were more than just a couple.

I saw the trailers. Hollywood-ized crap.

Frankly, I thought that it was disrespectful to the real Tuskeegee airmen, who are truly heroes and worthy of respect.

Ah. Good catch!

“This raises an interesting theory about yesterdays fly-by of Manhattan. Were they were putting together some footage which would be useful to George Lucas’ upcoming film about the Tuskegee Airmen of WWII, known as the “Red Tails.”

Well, this will never be admitted. It would be part of some epilogue saluting the proud legacy of the WWII heroes to have a Red Tail escorting Air Force One? ...

Not so far fetched if one considers George Lucas’ contributions to Obama ($33,100) on July 25th, 2008.”

I also saw that in earlier commercials. Was out tonight and the ads for the movie didn't show the poor CGI part. Not sure if they changed it.

What a complete jacka**. Colonel Shaw LED his men in their assault on Ft. Wagner, and DIED with them. In the earliest action for which a black soldier (Sgt. William Carney) was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Lucas can go bite Jar Jar Binks' a**.

Yup, remember that one well. Although it was only one AL ANG bird. The other was from the DC ANG (and not a red tail)
