Homeland Security Is Monitoring The Drudge Report, The New York Times
Atlantic Wire ^ | 11 January 2012 | Adam Clark Estes

It's unclear exactly why, but the Department of Homeland has been operating a "Social Networking/Media Capability" program to monitor the top blogs, forums and social networks online for at least the past 18 months.

Based on a privacy compliance review from last November recently obtained by Reuters, the purpose of the project is to "collect information used in providing situational awareness and establishing a common operating picture." Whatever that means.

Either way, the list of sites reported by Reuters reveals in a Wednesday afternoon exclusive is pretty intriguing...

I wonder if these increasing reports, or leaks if you will, are themselves part of a strategery to tamp down opposition.

Well, we know that dedicated liberals all welcome their Internet Overlords. I haven't heard squat out of the SRM or any left-wing bloggers about the vast overreach into American privacy that's going on.

For what it's worth, I think reports like this help to build opposition to Big Brother, not the other way around. Either way, it's incumbent on patriots to report this stuff, whenever they see it.

Before posting, I’d like to wish the DHS agent reading this the best of evenings — keep up the good work protecting us from subversive right wing propaganda and treasonous political thought. Now my post: I just wanted to say I love Chairman Obama.

Whew, I’m glad the government isn’t shirking their duty on that. I’m thinking that’s part of the General Welfare.

We approach thinking about that from opposite directions here. But, as you say not a peep from the left--big champions of the 1st Amendent, they are, so I'm told. I rather hope you're right this time.

Surely, you haven't forgotten about AttackWatch.org?

Actually, this is one of the few smart things they have done. It’s not too different from what the CIA has done for years. Read the papers - even as lame as they ahve become, there’s, like, NEWS there.

“Mainstream” news organizations spend billions to capture news around the world, report it and contextualize it. But the real cutting edge in news is in the alternative media.

Drudge is a news aggregator who constantly watches numerous news sources and has a knack for reporting the interesting bits he finds.

They should read FR for the same reason most of us do. A thousand people looking at news and events, many times at the local level, and posting them. Then another thousand people look at it, compare it to similar events they know about and put it all together in a single convenient thread.

And it’s all free. (They should, however, kick in during Freepathon. It’s only fair!)

My Facebook news feed has posts similar to this one, every day. Folks across the country are mad as hell about Obama's Commie-style government.

Can't disagree with your reasoning, but why the duplication of work between departments? Are they really just separate fiefdoms, who refuse to share intel with each other?

Probably so. Thank Jamie Gorelick.

We could have one 9-11 per month, and it would be less harmful to our country than what our government is doing in the name of “homeland security”. This has to end, now.....

We need to get everyone we know to vote these people out of office in November (every democrat).

Where in the &$@% are elected republicans while freedom of speech is being assaulted and perverted by those entrusted to protect and preserve it?

I see DHS has Hulu and YouTube on the watch list. Wonder if they’re checking out cat videos for subversive jihad messages. One can never be too careful.

Not surprising. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina random news sites and TV stations had more information than the head of Homeland Security. We tend to think of an all powerful government intelligence operation but actually they were watching CNN to try to figure out what was going on.

The short answer to your question is - yes. And it’s worse than you can imagine.

You’d be dismayed to see how local and state law enforcement and even federal agencies DON’T share information. CIA doesn’t talk to FBI (Gorelick’s wall). FBI doesn’t talk to state and local. State and local align with each other and DIA to go around the FBI. NYPD even sends people overseas to go around CIA and the FBI. Law enforcement doesn’t talk to the other emergency services.

Ten years on and BILLIONS spent to enhance intel sharing, and we’ve only moved inches down a road that is miles long.

(And no, not even Big Sis cares if Lazamataz would hit it.)
