Exactly. As gun purchases soared, murder rates fell.

Because people are living longer, and because abortion is so prevalent among younger people, there are proportionately more older people than before; hence a statistically different proportion of death causes.

For the first time in 45 years
That's about the same time the (not so) Great Society began.
I guess it finally got to the point where they ran out of victims.

15 million guns sold this year and something like 120,000 in one day in December. Hunters in some of the eastern states are larger than the armies of several tin pot dictators.

". . Criminologists have not reached a consensus about what's been driving murder rates down "

They must have created a new category for beheadings, bombings and other terrorist acts that result in murder/death.

I lived in a place where the sheriff boasted that he solved 100% of his cases. They found a body and he couldn’t solve it, so he came out with, “I have ruled this a suicide. This man stabbed himself in the back 15 times.” Kept a straight face all through the press conference.

Expert agree, it’s down to two possible reasons:

1. Fewer people are killing each other.

or

2. More people are dying of other stuff.

The experts will be applying for a 25 million dollar grant to determine which it is.

"Criminologists have not reached a consensus about what's been driving murder rates down..."

That's because they're liars. Their predecessors knew that an aging population would cause the trend. Criminologists want to help their professional and political friends to rob old folks (not as likely recidivists) and their few heirs of their properties. They laughingly call such actions, "politics" (been there).
