SC Sources: Gingrich Could Endorse Santorum

While Newt Gingrich campaign staffers are calling such talk premature, there are indications that should the former House Speaker bow out of the GOP race, he would throw his support behind rising Rick Santorum in a last-ditch effort to stop frontrunner Mitt Romney.

Multiple South Carolina sources affiliated with Santorum's campaign said Gingrich's campaign has contacted Santorum's campaign to discuss endorsing the former Pennsylvania senator should he drop out.

One source, speaking to Patch on the condition they not be identified, paraphrased Gingrich's stance as delivered by high level campaign staff this way: "If it can't be me, I want it to be Rick Santorum.""

Gingrich is looking at finishing as low as fifth place in New Hampshire and is currently polling at under 20 percent (good for third place) in South Carolina, according to rolling averages from Real Clear Politics.

Still, high-ranking officials within Santorum's South Carolina campaign don't foresee Gingrich stalling out before the primaries in the Palmetto State, where he once commanded an imposing lead in the polls.

I didn’t say barefoot and pregnant.

I said the primary caregiver. Obviously, as the kid grows older and more independent, the mom can loosen the apron strings, until the child is old enough to fully care for him/herself.

Didn’t Palin quit so she could stay home with her children.?

Then he was right, she should.

Actually....not all of them are saying the same things. To sum it up nicely: Beck believes Newt is a progressive “with some nefarious plans and he would vote for kook Ron Paul rather than Newt and hopes the racist tea party sees the light too. Of course he only called the motives of the tea party racist to “make us think.” Levin said last night on his radio show that Newt and Romney are “corporatists” not capitalists. He also said Bush was a corporatist. Rush is saying the Bain attack is not like anything he has ever heard from Newt and he feels it does not serve him in this election and so Newt must be in it just to destroy Romney. Not to win.

"I smell Romney."

I don't think so. Mittens wants Newt, Perry and Santorum to all stay in the race and split up the conservative vote. It is not to his advantage to have anyone drop out at this point except perhaps Huntsman.

If you actually read what Santorum said about Palin not attending CPAC, it's only insulting if you stretch it out and really want it to be so.

He never said she should stay home. In fact, he fully understood the trip was long and she had other obligations and responsibilities at that time.

Much ado about less than nothing.

Are you bragging or complaining about Newt?

Your spin on his non conservative record both recent and in the past is pretty weak.

Newt said the era of Reagan is over—guess he pines for the era of his idol FDR—and he is doing his best to keep it that way.

>>He needs to bow out and endorse a pro-capitalist candidate like Santorum.

Why would Newt endorse a pro-capitalist now? He has spent the last week telling us how Romney is an evil capitalist? Sounded more like Newt was going to throw his support behind Obama...

Sounds like a phony psyops story to me, probably sourced to the Romney campaign.

Perry should drop out after SC. And either Gingrich or Santorum, whoever performs more poorly. We coalesce after SC.

“Santorum is the one who is headed for an exit.”
He should. Gingrich is going to win SC, but Santorum is too self-serving to pull out.

That is totally absurd. Santorum tied in one state and finished fourth in the other. He looks Presidential and has incredible morals. A Santorum/Gingrich ticket would be strong. The only problem I have with the ticket at all is that we would end up without a candidate in 2020 because I don’t think Gingrich could run due to age. It would be another Bush/Cheney ticket which was not bad but we did not get an inherited candidate after 8 years and had to start from scratch.

This thread shows why Romney will win the nomination.

The conservatives can’t get their act together and become a “team”.

Santorum, Newt and Perry need to lock themselves in a room and not leave until a deal is cut—and they better do it soon or its game over.

Take it up with Jim Robinson. He feels the same as I do. Maybe we both need to stop spinning his nonconservative record and listen to you.

I think Newt’s speech will say he’ll align with Santorum if Rick beats him in South Carolina.

There is no way he is going to call a press conference and say something like that. It would be the dumbest thing ever. I want Santorum to win but not this way. I think that Gingrich should stay in and fight. There has only been 2 states and now the real race begins. If Newt does not want to be President he could stay in and help slaughter Romney. He can still be VP later on. There is ZERO reason for Newt to drop out at this point.

I don’t think Palin ‘folded’. She was not a likely winner after 3 years of brutal attacks. Her negatives were way too high and her base support, while strong, was not wide enough. If you watched her numbers, they go worse and worse into 2011. She has great capabilities politically, but I am certain she saw it was a tall order to face the headwinds she did. Like many excellent conservatives, the insiders of both parties really damaged her.

Its the same mentality he showed in business. No care for how many people he hurt, lives destroyed. Its all about his money and power.

JR already knows I'm a Santorum man and as long as we don't say anything that promotes Mitt we can duke it out to our hearts’ content.

I like Newt just like Santorum better.
