While Newt Gingrich campaign staffers are calling such talk premature, there are indications that should the former House Speaker bow out of the GOP race, he would throw his support behind rising Rick Santorum in a last-ditch effort to stop frontrunner Mitt Romney.
Multiple South Carolina sources affiliated with Santorum's campaign said Gingrich's campaign has contacted Santorum's campaign to discuss endorsing the former Pennsylvania senator should he drop out.
One source, speaking to Patch on the condition they not be identified, paraphrased Gingrich's stance as delivered by high level campaign staff this way: "If it can't be me, I want it to be Rick Santorum.""
Gingrich is looking at finishing as low as fifth place in New Hampshire and is currently polling at under 20 percent (good for third place) in South Carolina, according to rolling averages from Real Clear Politics.
Still, high-ranking officials within Santorum's South Carolina campaign don't foresee Gingrich stalling out before the primaries in the Palmetto State, where he once commanded an imposing lead in the polls.

“I have a feeling she has some demands on her time. And a lot of them have financial benefits attached to them. So I’m sure that she’s doing what’s best for her and her family,” Santorum said about Palin’s notable absence from CPAC, the annual conference beginning Thursday in Washington, D.C.
He also said (in response to the bogus flap that followed):
“If CPAC were in Anchorage, I wouldn’t go, I have responsibilities, too,”
That’s your opinion, not fact. She hasn’t spoke out against anyone except barry. Let’s keep in honest here. Todd came out in support of Newt.
it’s maddening isn’t it?
We know the primaries should be for republicans only and yet 3 years ago I said it a ton of times that we got McCain because of Dems and nonparty voters voting.
Did the GOP do anything about it ? No and so the question is why?
Is it because they think Dems and non party electing our candidate is a good thing and if so why?
Or like you said they want a moderate and not a conservative, a conservative which is a true conservative socially and fiscal not some half baked “well I have no problem with reducing the military and ignoring Iran” or”lets marry the pet dog or my sister.”
“Gingrich just got $5 Million dollars and is spending $3.4M in SC in advertising. He has another $15M coming from the same source.”
Plus I will be making another donation next week. Hahaha.
What Karl Rove did to Christine O’Donnell was despicable. He was foaming at the mouth when she won her primary. In retrospect, I think that Palin should have finished her term in Alaska as unpleasant as the might have been with all the bogus lawsuits against her. It certainly would have been a blast in the past by now.
“This made me think of January 2008: Novak: Fred Thompson drop-out rumors traced to Romney campaign “
Then again, Fred did drop out.
Too early—wait for February 2—then Newt should retire and cast his support to anyone who is still standing.
OR Endorse Trump on his 3rd Party bid! I believe the Fix is in and its been selected that Mitt will run and be defeated by Obama/Hillary. Newt upset this and for that will get the Pat Buchanan treatment—outcast from the RINO party.
newt doesnt care ..he knows hes not gonna win...he got blasted in iowa by romneys super pac and cried and didnt fight..so he is just gonna try to stop romney and save his image as much as possible so he can have his cushy book deals and speaking fees afterwards....looky outy after number oney
She did have complimentary words for Santorum.....sounded like she was in his camp or at least leaning towards his ideas and policies...
...she hasn't endorsed anyone either.
A father’s role is equally important, but different.
What is it that is so natural in the animal kingdom that is so repulsive to you?
I pray our nominee is Santorum or Gingrich. If this is accurate from Gingrich it proves he puts country first and he understands the dire seriousness of no Obama or Romney. This is honor and character.
Exactly! This is exactly what the Obama machine DOES NOT want.If Santorum or Gingrich quickly back one or the other than whichever one will have the best chance at beating Romney then Obama.
monopolies, insider trading, crony capitalism, ponzi scheme's, corporate raiders and people who seek to privatize profits and socialize losses all fall within the legitimate issues to discuss in my opinion.
Sorry, but your analysis on Santorum’s loss, while making a good sound bite is balogna. I live in PA, and while endorcing Toomey did not help, it was not remotely the sole reason he lost by a rediculous margin.
Santorum lost for a lot of reasons, many by his own making and to keep regurgitating that campaign talking point doesn’t make it true. Yes, supporting Spectre didn’t help his cause, but it was not soley what caused him to lose by a 59 to 41 Margin.
You are ill informed of flat out dillusional if you think that one act in and of itself is why Santorum lost... its not remotely.
Your analysis that any Republican can win, continues to show you are either ill informed about Santorum, or just swept up in emotion.
Santorum was painted as a radical extremist, quite effectively by the left, repeated actions by him alienated him from voters both swing and party faithful.
Put bluntly he couldn’t survive a limited statewide attack by a motivated left backing the most boring candidate in history, who literally was a no show for the campaign. He has no chance against Obama and the attacks that will be coming his way.
To believe a republican will win, just because they are a republican and Obama is unpopular is silly. Swing voters don’t like Obama, but he’s a known, if they can paint the R candidate as an extremist, they’ll either stay home or stay with the known even if it isnt’ ideal. Just like most here hate Romney, but if it comes to Romney V Obama on election day, folks will either stay home or vote for Romney.
Santorum has NO chance of taking PA or OH, assuming he manages not to be painted as the devil by the left, something he was completely unable to diffuse in 06. He won’t win his home state, or Ohio either, which means even if he could pull out a squeaker, he loses, for without one of those two, he won’t go over the top.
I could live with Santorum as president, but he doesn’t have the political savvy, personability or intellect to survice the hard attack that will come against the Republican nominee, he is far too easy to paint as radical, and like it or not, it will be a repeate of 2006 for him. THe margin will not be as big, but he will lose.
Wow!If your ONLY PALIN ONLY GINGRICH mentality continues DU and DailyKaos have a blogging/post job for you.
That should be
“I’ll take Newt anyday, I like Santorum over Romney but not as much as I like Newt.”
—{The GOP had better do something about Iowa and NH being first and second next time around, those states are a joke. }—
They did do something, it is designed to head off the Reagan wannabes, and it is working like a charm.
