As awful as it is to say, those poor innocent kids are better off in state custody than in that mess of a household.

They place the children with other family “not involved with the party” whatever that means.

It is by no means clear that the kids are better off or in state custody. Most states make family reunification their primary focus so its highly likely these poor kids will suffer through multiple foster placements while their parents do a bit of jail and then treatment, counseling and parenting classes to get their kids (and welfare) back.

These kids will probably never get a fair shake at a functional family. I’ve thought for years that kids with druggie parents should just be immediately put up for adoption and given a real chance for a normal home life.

I personally know two people who were taken from their homes by child protective services, and were sexually abused while in "state custody."
