38% Say Government Should Pay for College for Those Who Can't Afford It
Rasmussen Reports ^ | 1/6/12 | Rasmussen Reports

Most Americans still believe any good student can find a way to get into college, and if a student is accepted at a college but can't afford it, a sizable number of adults think the government should pay for it.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of American Adults finds that 60% of adults believe that just about any good student who wants to attend college can find a way to do so in America today. That’s up from 54% in early May 2009. Twenty-nine percent (29%) don’t believe this to be true, while 11% are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Fall semester was my daughter’s first at a big-10 school. She tells me about two of her profs who are teaching econ & some gov course (general ed credits). One prof from Turkey, the other from Egypt. Instead of following the test books, they assign reading from other books. Serious slant in the reading and lectures! We don’t have to wonder why a business grad doesn’t understand basic economics. Here is one reason... She hasn’t even received her grade from one of the profs yet. Bull$#!+

I wonder if the sampling error takes into account people who have only cell phones and people like me who don’t answer the phone unless I recognize the caller.

If not, then someone should do some statistics on just how representative a sampling telephone surveys are. I question whether a good sample can be obtained with 1000 respondents.

Just what ever happened to the quaint idea of working and saving to support what ever you want to do? What ever happened to the idea of delayed gratification? This socialistic stuff is undermining the United States.

In our country today you can’t save money (either individuals or small Ma & Pop businesses) due to the gross crimes committed by our government upon the people.

It’s called the IRS and the Banking system.

The game is that you are taxed yearly upon every dollar you save to buy equipment, inventory, cars, personal property or any other reason. It is a CRIME to set aside any money and not pay taxes on it until it is spent.

The sole reason for this is so that you are forced to spend what you have and BORROW money to buy what you would normally save to purchase. The IRS laws force the individual or business to deal with the banks so that the banking industry can reap the profits guaranteed by IRS regulations that force individuals to pay taxes on every penny they earn, even if some is reserved for later purchases or for financial security.

This arrangement between Big Banks and the IRS has completely taken the wind out of individual savings accounts.

For example: You are single and make $100,000 a year. The IRS takes 19% ($18,738)of it for income tax, SS and Medicare. This means you only had $81,000 to live on during the taxed year. If you had been allowed to save $25,000 tax free that year your taxes would have been drastically reduced and probably into a lower tax bracket.

Better yet, if you co-habituated with a partner and the IRS allowed a deduction the same as “file as married” you would have received an even greater deduction to save if the partner did not earn income.

I don’t mention currently approved IRS retirement private accounts such as IRA...etc since they are still controlled by both the banks and IRS and funds cannot be freely used at the discretion of the depositor. This is simply more collusion between the IRS and the Banks.

Under IRS guidelines, no matter how you slice it, the relationship between the two exists due the single fact that IRS regulations force you into the waiting arms of the banks. No wonder “too big to fail” was the battle cry when the economy almost collapsed.

The only solution is a Flat or Sales tax that fairly taxes all at the same rate with no exceptions and allows all money not spent to rest in peace until it is actually used.

I won’t live long enough to see that.

The thumbs on the scales for womyn and minorities is so heavy in terms of measuring SAT scores for admission they (womyn/minorities) practically don’t have to take them.

In what way do you say the 'thumb is on the scales' for women and minorities? They score the tests all the same way. Are you referring to the way they are normed by sex? Are you referring to the predictions of success in college? Could you clarify?

What planet do you live on? All colleges use a multiplier of SAT scores based on ethnicity and gender to meet sometimes unstated but always quite real “diversity” quotas. White and Asian males get 1.0. Others get a sliding scale start well beyond 1.5.

We can’t prove it since he won’t release his records, but many (myself included) are pretty sure this is what got that barry the half-wit into Harvard, his idiot wife into Princeton and both diplomas and degrees.

You are very misinformed re white males having a more difficult time getting into college, When compared with white females a white male with much lower scores will be accepted over the female.

Re minorities, the prediction equations actually over predict success.

BTW “what planet do you live on” is quite a hostile statement coming from someone so misinformed.

Not in these Unites States. You never heard of “Affirmative Action” — THE de-facto guideline for all college admissions?

Sorry if you found my comment hostile — you are the one who is badly misinformed (and thus deserving of the question based on incredulity of your statement). Google “affirmative action college admissions” and “reverse discrimination college admissions” if you need a few hundred thousand links to back up my contention.

Interestingly, I couldn’t find any to back up your assertion, but many that say the opposite (and thus back me up).

You say you could find no data to back up the preference for males in college? Good grief man, are you from another planet? LOL

Just google male college applicants and you will find endless references. If that is beyond your level of motivation then read the first of many articles:

September 28, 2011

Male College Applicants More Likely To Benefit From Affirmative Action

If Bakke were an applicant today his story might be very different. A survey of admissions directors released last week found that male applicants of all races are far more likely to benefit from affirmative action-like policies than female applicants. What's behind the aggressive push for male students is the decades-long trend of more women on campus. Women have comprised a majority of students in higher education since 1979. Many colleges have sought to remedy that imbalance by admitting more men, especially among undergraduates, forcing schools to reach deeper into the applicant pool. Read more at: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20111646-503544.html

BTW "you never heard of affirmative action" is yet another hostile statement. LOL
