Santorum: Trim Social Security now even if painful

KEENE, N.H. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum called Friday for immediate cuts to Social Security benefits, risking the wrath of older voters and countless others who balk at changes to the entitlement program.

"We can't wait 10 years," even though "everybody wants to," Santorum told a crowd while campaigning in New Hampshire and looking to set himself apart from his Republican rivals four days before the New Hampshire primary.

Most of his opponents have advocated phasing in a reduction and say immediate cuts would be too big a shock to current and soon-to-be retirees.

You’re right of course. It’s simple arithmetic. In their heart of hearts they know you’re right. They just think they can yell and scream and take the money from someone else.

People make fun of Greek pensioners. Now maybe they are beginning to understand why Greece went broke.

This is why I think this country is done.

Fifty million Americans living on SSI off of 110 million Americans working in private industry. It’s that simple.

“Why do you believe that I owe you because I have three little future taxpayers in my home and take deductions for them? Why do you feel entitled to the fruits of my labor?”

To the extent that one person or class of person gets to take a deduction that others do not get, the group not getting the deduction are subsidizing the other.

Let me make it simple for you... Half the people in this country pay NO federal taxes because of the deductions they get. Some even get a refund even though they pay no taxes.

Of necessity, that means those of us that do pay taxes have to be taxed at a higher rate to make up for it. How can you say that I (or we) are not subsidizing them. They use government services too and are not paying their share. We are paying it for them - out of our pocket.

Got it?

I still don’t get it.

I told you that I pay a huge amount of taxes (not counting the hidden taxes) after deductions. You seem to be accusing me of taking money out of your pocket. Please explain?

FWIW - I support a flat tax with no deductions across the board for both individuals and businesses with a host of other pro-growth ideas such as tort reform. I also support massive cuts to government spending and a balanced budget amendment.

Again, they can have my 6k a year until I retire if they will phase the program out and my children won’t have to do the same. I won’t see a dime of social security in 22 years despite paying much more into it than most. You seem to feel “entitled” to my tax dollars if you begrudge my child tax deduction.

The money is gone. It was spent. The politicians spent it. They left IOU’s.

Just because someone robs you doesn’t mean you get to eat your neighbor’s food.

That was worth more than 2 cents.

I’m not worried that Liberals want to bankrupt this country. I am worried that well meaning conservatives want to bankrupt this country.

Your post is 100% correct. He was right in the front of the whole “compassionate” conservative army who spent like drunken sailors from 2002 to 2006.

To his credit, at least he realizes his mistake.

I’ve got a question for you DJ. Your profile states you are a “housewife, mother and grandmother, married to the same man for 41 years”

So if it’s not too presumptuous for me to ask and I’m not trying to be offensive or call you out personally, but have you ever held a job and had SS and Medicare deductions taken out of your paycheck? Are you and or your husband retired and now collecting SS benefits?

Why are you so passionate about collecting SS benefits when you yourself “may” have never contributed yourself?

You are also very active in soliciting donations to FR (not that I’m complaining ;)). But I presume that in doing so, you also make contributions yourself and that would indicate to me that you have at least some disposable income and aren’t exactly sitting in a cold dark house eating Alpo.

So why should I as a younger and still working person, some 15 years or more from my own retirement, be expected to supplement your retirement with my contributions? How exactly is that not an “entitlement” in your opinion?

“Please explain?”

Because those of us who don’t have any children end up getting taxed higher because you have kids. Their your kids, enjoy them... But everybody needs to pay the same rate based on income. I also object to the mortgage deduction, because it’s unequal.

Not buying it. I have already given my reasons and alternatives repeatedly. Not doing it again. You want to engage in generational warfare, find someone else. Oh and, I'm not on SS.

Have a nice evening.

My Hubby works over 40 hours a week and probably will until the day he dies. We cannot afford to retire.

SS, Medicare/Medicaid, and Defense cost more than the tax revenue government receives. If we don’t cut those three, we cannot balance the budget. Ever.

Newt says he wants to eliminate our deficit by growing our way out of it. He says we can do that if congress passes his special blend of tax cuts. Of course, politicians have always been saying that.

There’s a site “Democratic Underground” you might be interested in. I think this site was meant for Conservatives. Conservatives take care of themselves and their family and don’t insist that other people take care of them.

I agree that everyone needs to pay the same. I think that should extend to people receiving benefits too. If everyone had skin in the game, we would not be electing idiots who spend like drunken sailors. I am fine with that.

The government tries to use incentives to control behavior and the government wants more children. More children = more taxpayers in the future. They offer a child tax credit and I take three of them.

Don’t worry though.... considering I pay over 6k a year into social security and I won’t see a dime of it in 22 years it’s a wash.

Why are you entitled to the fruits of my labor? Answer the question.

Is your answer that you have to pay more if I take the deduction?

Why is my money yours? Did you work for it? Are you telling me like some on this thread that it’s too bad it won’t be there for me but me and my children have to fund your retirement because politicians promised you?

Please explain to me where your failure to properly save and prepare for your own retirement is my problem?

Like I said, “why don’t we just kill the old bastards and be done with it.”

Look, Santorum is an idiot if he thinks he can get away with cutting the SS checks of the seniors.
