Ron Paul's campaign is out with this new ad in South Carolina, which hits Rick Santorum on his "record of betrayal."

"One serial hypocrite exposed," the ad says, showing clips of Newt Gingrich. "Now another has emerged: Rick Santorum, a corporate lobbyist and Washington politician. A record of betrayal."

On the other hand, you will notice how rare it is for the newt-haters to actually rely on his votes. They much prefer to float out offhand comments, attacks on his personal life, and the occasional brain fart, because his voting record does not support their efforts to smear him.

DING DING DING: We have a WINNER. You are exactly right, which is why I converted from Newt hater (well, never was a hater, just a doubter). Based on his brilliant debate performances and his attacks only being against the media and Obama - I sort of stepped back and analyzed what he did in the House. And he was a solid, if not perfect, conservative. He also forced Bill Clinton to govern to the right. In a field of imperfects, he has actually accomplished more for conservatism than anyone else by far. That, and talking the talk the best, is why I moved to support him. His conservative cred is higher than Santorums.

“Newt is the only one that can withstand these attacks and come back punching. Rick is about to go down with the count.”

Agree about Newt. Santorum hasn’t been on the executioner’s block long enough to know how he will deal with it.

“...or even Rand as a VP nominee.”

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner, ladies and gents.

Think about it for a moment. Who has the most to lose if Ron Paul goes third party? Who (arguably) has the most to gain by making a deal with the Paul camp?

My opinion, and it’s only my opinion, is that a deal hasn’t been sealed yet. There is still a window of opportunity for another more conservative candidate to make a deal. I don’t see it happening, though. The circular firing squad dynamic has taken hold.

“Ron Paul needs to be put on Meds and monitored closely. Very unstable.”

There’s an old saying I like: never pick a fight with someone who is crazy or who has nothing to lose.

And so it begins...

I have to laugh... Mostly, because that’s all there’s left to do.

Suspect you won’t see Romney start taking Santorum out until
Santorum is done serving his useful purpose. But when it comes - combined with Paul’s efforts - Santorum will also find himself smoldering on the ash heap of history...

Could you back it off? Jim Robinson also likes Newt, want to say he is astroturfing?

I could support Perry, Newt or Santorum against Romney and RuPaul.

Any of them would be a vast improvement over those two pinheads.

“What kind of deal do you envision that might work?”

You’re dealing with ideologues, so the deal has to adopt some of their ideas. If I were say Rick Santorum, I’d be talking about why a return to the gold standard might not be so bad of an idea. And I’d be doing that by, oh, Monday.

The key things that the Paul camp want as differentiated from the other candidates are not all that horrible in my view. In addition to agreeing to sound money, I’d be talking about serious Fed reform, how an Austrian school economist would be the next Fed chair and how I wouldn’t go to war without a formal declaration of war.

Other issues I don’t think are as important to the Paul camp. Contrary to the oft quoted canard, drug legalization isn’t the unifying issue. Start by offering 50% of a loaf, and they’ll be listening real hard.

Why doesn’t Ron Paul go after Mitt?

They don't share the same demographic. If Paul wants to peel off conservative voters he has to attack the opponent who has them.

This is why children should not argue with the adults. Newt's legislative record, which you may not even realize exists - is more conservative than Santorum's. Further, Santorum admitted in the last debate that it was Newt who was his conservative inspiration when he first got to congress. So while Newt has dallied with liberals more than I would like - something everyone knows by now - his actual accomplishments in the congress are amazingly conservative. As I said, a more conservative voting record than Santorum's.

It is odd that Paul goes harshly negative on Gingrich and Santorum, but not on his biggest purported opponent, Romney.

I would hugely prefer to see someone like Rick Santorum make the deal, but the logic of a mittens/Paul ticket is pretty hard to avoid.

I expect people to do what most benefits them. And if making a deal is what benefits them most, then that’s what they’ll do.

I positively loathe Mitt Romney but I really, really respect Rand Paul.

A LOT.

I’d be hard pressed NOT to vote for that ticket.

“Why doesn’t Ron Paul go after Mitt?”

Because if Paul did real damage to the RINO establishment the party machinery would squash him like the bug he is. He would be setup and primaried. His Congressional career would be over.
