National conservative leaders are wondering who, if anyone, can stop Mitt Romney from walking off with the Republican nomination after his narrow win in Iowa and his expected comfortable victory in New Hampshire next week. The name that keeps surfacing is Rick Perry, which says a lot about the desperation that the anti-Romney forces are feeling now.

Perry insiders say that the plausible course forward for the candidate is to make this a one-on-one race with Mr. Romney so that the conservative vote doesn't split in two, three or four ways.
South Carolina has a history of deciding the eventual GOP primary winner. If Mr. Perry can take first or second place, he can live to fight another day and prepare for Super Tuesday, when voters in the bulk of Southern states go to the polls. Perry supporters also say that a comeback depends on his ability to make this a North versus South race. They say that three-quarters of Republican voters aren't sold on Mr. Romney. The problem for Mr. Perry, of course, is that even more voters aren't sold on him, either, in part because he has done such a lousy job of educating voters about his admirable record on jobs and growth in Texas.
Many conservative leaders that I talked to after the Iowa caucuses are rallying around the latest flash, Rick Santorum. But others have concluded that despite all of his debate mishaps and his poorly run campaign thus far, Mr. Perry may be the only Republican candidate capable of beating Mr. Romney. As one campaign aide told me: "We have to make a good second impression."

I mean everyone else has been up and down with no clear favorite, why not Rick Perry?
I would love Perry to have a comeback. By the time we vote here in Colorado, it will be more clear whether that’s going to happen. In the meantime, I’m planning to vote Santorum. Though I think Perry’s chances are much better in a general election, it remains to be seen if he can win the nomination.
I live in Dallas also. I like Perry. I resent (tho you didn’t do it) people trying to paint him as a spoiler.
Is Santorum a spoiler? Is Newt? Rick Perry has better credentials than either of them and he has money and loyal supporters.
He certainly has a right to run. I’m glad he stayed in. It would be a pretty dull race without him.
The Dallas Morning News had some really snarky articles about him today, one of them parroting the Politico thing about rumors from “unnamed” persons within his campaign.
The Dallas Morning News hates Perry. It’s a liberal rag.

Well, whose record should Rick Perry talk about? He doesn’t have a record in New York.
He has an outstanding record in Texas and has proved to be a leader and a consistent conservative.
Sorry to be NEGATIVE about other candidates, but Rick Perry is the only candidate with a record to run on.
He hasn’t just talked about conservative values. He’s done them in Texas.

He has a good record in Texas from what I understand. I would have no trouble voting for him if he was the Republican nominee. However, I prefer Newt until he wins or drops out. I think Newt still has a chance.

People here are so fickle and shallow it scares me.
We’ve had zero primaries. We had one caucus - the results of which almost never name the eventual candidate. I understand Rick S. spent a year having Sunday dinner with everyone in Iowa.
One Santorum supporter admitted to me that his support was more based on not liking anyone else than it was on liking Santorum
The support for various candidates here on Free Republic has been schizophrenic. And wild.
First it was Palin (guilty here on that). She didn’t run. In looking for comfort people here glommed onto an unlikely and eventually futile semi-worship of Mr. Cain.
He was forced to drop out. Immediately, the Cain people rushed to Newt Gingrich, a man who was reviled by conservatives as little as a year ago. I like Newt and he was fun in the debates, but he lost it over negative advertising and when he finally responded, he acted like a madman.
Now, after one rather inconsequential victory in a caucus, the lemmings have landed on Santorum, who wasn’t even a blip on the radar a week ago.
And suddenly if we want someone besides those two flawed and vulnerable candidates (Newt and Santorum) we’re taking votes away from worthy conservatives and handing them to Mitt?
Please give me a break. Perry is a better candidate and would have a much better chance against Obama.
I agree that Perry’s military record will score a lot of points with voters in the south. Wouldn’t hurt for him to introduce his cotton farmer mom and dad to the national audience either. Perry has so much going for him, he just needs to get it out there — and he will.

The “dumb cowboy joke” got G.W. Bush 8 years in the White House, so I won’t mind more of the same.
Sad but true. There are people in the country and on this forum who hate Texas.
I can understand hating, say, Califoria or maybe Illinois, but Texas??

Those initial debates did not help him. However, not everyone watches them as closely as those here. He can still do it.
