Joseph P. Kennedy III, the son of former U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy, is launching an exploratory committee in preparation for a likely run for the seat recently vacated by U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, sources confirmed this morning.
Kennedy, a 30-year-old prosecutor who is the grandson of late Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, is slated to step down from his post in the Middlesex District Attorneys office and will open up an exploratory committee, which will allow him to begin raising money to run for the seat. His last day as a prosecutor will be Jan. 20, said a spokesperson for the DAs office.
Sources said Kennedy has been conducting polls in the newly-drawn district, which stretches from Newton and Brookline to Lakevile and Freetown. The district was recently re-drawn as part of the states redistricting and was stripped of the South Coast Democratic strongholds of New Bedford and Fall River. The new district, which now includes more conservative towns such as Bellingham, Franklin and North Attleboro, was cited by Frank as a key reason for his decision not to seek re-election.
Kennedy could not be reached immediately for comment.
Former Massachusetts Democratic Party Chair Phil Johnston, a longtime Kennedy family adviser and ally, hailed the newest Kennedy political hopefuls decision.
I think hell be a terrific congressman, Johnston said. Hes a very bright, very committed person. He has an incredible commitment to the values of his family.
Kennedys move sets up a battle with Boston City Councilor Michael Ross, a Newton native who has already set up an exploratory committee and begun raising money. Republican Sean Bielat, who challenged Frank in 2010, is also reportedly considering another run.
Developing...
The phrase “Barney Frank’s seat” should never be used in polite company.
A Kennedy running is an automatic win, is it not?
He’ll have to wait to find it unoccupied.....
some of the comments on Herald story (H. Carr list ping:
if it isn’t 108 mph, no seatbelt, “driving safety advocate” lt. governors in this state, it’s stuff like this)
—I thought we got rid of the Kennedys after Ted K died and patches quit They are like herpes - they never go away -just keep popping up
—The gene pool is shallower than a puddle already. The sad part is the stupid voters will elect this idiot. One more nitwit with money spending everyone elses.
—I hope there’s a democrat with b*lls who will not drop out of the race due to a another incompetant Kennedy jumping in the race.
Some candidate needs to put the final nail in the Kennedy family quest to return the family to Camelot.
I can just hear it know, some guy in his 90’s telling stories about how he was with “Jack” back in ‘46.
—I guess this means we dont need an election We just anoint him Isnt that how things are done in this banana republic?
Sean Bielat - fine Marine and businessman - almost won against Bawney, last go around. He’s making a decision - and will announce on Jan 17th - on whether to run again, according to his website.
How very Massachusetts.
Wonder when they’re going to elect someone who’s not a felon/fudgepacker/Vietnam faker?
Oh, forgot, it IS Massachusetts.
Could we not just kick them out of the union?
Ugh! A political reincarnation of Teddy.
Not anymore.
Could be but who knows (see below)...also it’s said Frank didn’t want to run again because he know the GOP would control the House and it’s no fun being in the minority party.
Looks as if the people of that district will replace a faggot with a maggot.
The new guy will have to replace the fabric on Barney’s seat.
LOL! Poor choice of words for that headline..... Being Mass. I have to assume that the fix is already in given that it’s a Kennedy.
another Kennedy thinking...’I’M OWED THIS POSITION’
What has this character done in his young 31 years other than having a loco for a dad?
So what is this Kennedy’s claim to game; Booze, drugs, whores, or just general stupidity? Every Kennedy has one.
Joe is as dumb as a box of rocks...and he deals willingly with that nutjob in Caracas.
Perfect candidate for the seat.
I do hope he gets his butt kicked.
But then, that’s just me.
Hope Bielat runs and wins.
btw for those wondering why this kid is Joe III and why his father isn’t, it’s kind of weird but this is how they treated it:
Joe Kennedy Sr—the patriarch
Joe Kennedy Jr—son, killed in war when bomb in his plane
prematurely exploded
Joe Kennedy II—son of RFK, and this lad’s dad. By rights should be Joe III (all have Patrick for a middle name)
Joe Kennedy III—this newcomer.
Joe II was married to Sheila Rauch but later tried for an annullment, thus the comment about “trying to get him declared illegitimate”. Joe III’s twin brother’s middle name is Rauch
(Matthew Rauch Kennedy)
About the annullment attempt, via the entry for J. Kennedy III on Wikipedia:
>>Two years later, Kennedy asked the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston for an annulment of the marriage on the grounds of “lack of due discretion of judgment”, meaning that he was mentally incapable of entering into marriage at the time of his wedding. An annulment would give the marriage the status of never having existed, and allow Kennedy to marry Anne Elizabeth “Beth” Kellyhis former staff memberin a Roman Catholic ceremony, as well as allow him to participate in other sacraments of the church, such as Holy Communion, not available to a divorced person who remarries. Rauch refused to agree to the annulment, and Kennedy married Kelly in a non-Catholic civil ceremony on October 23, 1993.
>>The Boston Archdiocese initially granted Kennedy the annulment, which was only discovered by Rauch after the decision in 1996. Rauch, who is an Episcopalian, wrote a book Shattered Faith: A Woman’s Struggle to Stop the Catholic Church from Annulling Her Marriage explaining that she was opposed to the concept of annulment, because it meant in Roman Catholic theology that the marriage had never actually existed, and claiming that the Kennedy family influence made it possible to unilaterally “cancel” a twelve-year marriage. A tribunal decision in favour of annulment is automatically appealed, and the decision is not effective until a second, conforming, sentence is granted. Instead of allowing the appeal to take place in the United States, Rauch appealed directly to the Holy See.
A Kennedy running is an automatic win???
