It looks very much like the “art” that was on my fridge when the kids were in grade school. I shoulda saved some of those.

I’m not sure which is uglier, the painting or the woman.

How can you tell where the damage is? Who’d notice?

Still died in 1980, and the city of Denver worked for years with his widow, Patricia, to secure the single-artist museum. She died in 2005, and her husband's collection was bequeathed to the city.

Four of Still's works were auctioned by Sotheby's last year for $114 million to endow the Denver museum, which opened with much fanfare in November.

This sounds like a complete swindle to me. It would be interesting to know who, in the Denver city government, is making money off this.

I like the painting. I’d prefer a Rothko, or Mondrian, or Hockney, but it’s good.

Anyone who claims they could do it should give it a try. Keep in mind you need to be the first, and not just copy someone else’s ideas.

I could write Shakespeare, but only because he did it first.

Oh, and there’s no difference between a $50 wine and a $5 wine, since I don’t like wine.

From The Communist Goals:

22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to “eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.”
23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. “Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.”

It is worth $30M only because commie art pimps say it is worth $30M.

Those paintings were AUCTIONED!

That means somebody made a conscious decision to pony up their own cash and shell out.

Where’s the waste of taxpayer money here? Sounds like the cash flow went in the opposite direction this time.

Reminds of the story of the Shah of Iran being shown a painting of a donkey and told that the painting was appraised at $50,000; the Shah laughed and said for $50 he could buy a real donkey.

We are surrounded by abstraction in nature and some artists notice it, find it beautiful and try to do it justice in paint. For instance, have you ever noticed how sunlight filtered through tree leaves on a sunny afternoon makes these little perfect glimmering circles on the sidewalk? There was an artist a while back who did some very nice paintings based on this.

I do more realistic art, but awareness of the abstract structure of the landscape keeps my paintings from looking like a collage of pasted on objects.

On the other hand, art that is designed to shock or offend is simply bad art. And furthermore, no art needs government funding.

It appears to be a painting that was meant to be defaced. Not that I approve of what this nutjob did, but I don’t know how you could tell if someone had defaced this awful piece of dreck.

If one owns a 30 million dollar painting one has it insured. IMHO the frame is worth more than the painting. Maybe the owner paid to have it defaced and will later split the payout with her. What’s that? There is no frame? I stand by my statement.

I like Rothko too. I tried to do my own version, but it really is harder than it looks.

That means somebody made a conscious decision to pony up their own cash and shell out.

Not necessarily. It's common for art-auction purchases to be made by institutions, including public institutions. It's also common for price agreements to be made in advance, in order to inflate the tax-deduction for the contributor and the "value" for the seller.

Thanks for your input! I confess I have no opinion either way on the painting, as I simply am not familiar with the movement in question. Georgia O’Keeffe is as close as I ever got to abstract art, and that’s obviously something quite different that what this artist was about.

I was an artist between the ages of 8 and 28 and that thing is garbage and anyone could do it.

Oh, and there’s no difference between a $50 wine and a $5 wine, since I don’t like wine.

I do like art and that ain't art. It's what you get when you put a Holstein cow and a Guernsey cow side-by-side on the highway and run them down with a Mack truck.
