Dan Lungren's critics wary of Hetch Hetchy plan
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 1/4/12 | Carolyn Lochhead, Chronicle Washington Bureau

Washington -- Dan Lungren, a Republican member of Congress from Sacramento County, wants to give the world "a second Yosemite Valley." The valley already exists, in Yosemite National Park - buried under 300 feet of water in the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, which provides San Franciscans and 1.7 million other Bay Area residents with pristine water straight from the Sierra.

All that would be needed would be to blow up the dam, which Yosemite godfather John Muir fought to his dying breath in 1914. The Schwarzenegger administration in 2006 estimated the cost at $3 billion to $10 billion.

Lungren said Yosemite holds a special spot in his heart, as it is where he met his wife. But his critics, pointing to his zero rating from the League of Conservation Voters, say Lungren's environmental record is anything but romantic.

They suspect that Lungren is taunting San Francisco liberals or positioning himself for a re-election race in a competitive district against Democratic challenger Ami Bera, who touts a " 'smart' and 'green' relationship with the earth."

The Left loves to hate Dan Lundgren, so I can't tell if he's yanking their chain, or if he's serious. However, without Hetch Hetchy, there will be many years when San Francisco won't have drinking water.

Lungren says he wants to blow up O'Shaughnessy Dam and restore Hetch Hetchy Valley.

You say that like its a bad thing.

Now, if we could fix it so they don’t have air that would really be awesome.

Anything to clear out and let dry up the cesspool known as San Francisco, is a good thing.

This may be Lundgren posturing but I think I finally understand the greenie wienies. California won’t be environmentally okay until it is unfit for human habitation.

What complete idiocy.

Lungren is one of the worst.

Quote from the article: "Democrats have always smelled a GOP stunt that forces Democrats to defend a dam in a national park and lets Republicans quote John Muir about the splendor of mountains."

Brilliant stroke, Dan Lundgren! It lays bare the total hypocrisy of Bay Area residents and the politicians they elect: Pelosi, Feinstein, Boxer and the noxious crowd of Marxist ex-Hippies they send to Sacramento to destroy California.

It’s not complete lunacy. I think it was crazy to fill it up in the first place.

We don’t have the money to get rid of it, but it would be great if it could some day go back to it’s natural state.

Have you ever seen it? My husband thinks it would be prettier than the Yosemite Valley.

I got an inkling of greenie weenie thought when some of their number began agitating for making the plains from North Dakota down through Texas a "buffalo wallow".

Well, it’s been there a long time, and getting rid of it would still leave a lot of filth that would take years to clean up. But once that process was complete, it would make a beautiful hiking spot. The scenery would be breathtaking. It’s current use is really unnecessary and it would make a lot of sense to return it to its natural state.

(I’m talking about San Francisco, of course.)

Oh great! Somebody named "Lockhead" in the SF Comical writing about Lumpjaw Lundgren's most stupid imaginable idea.

Good grief! Let's tear down all the brilliant creations of mankind and get right back to being the savages that could only grind their nuts on the rocks!!!

Where do you think the mentally diseased residents of the Bay Area will go if the have to leave? I live directly in the path of what has been a 3 or 4 decade migration of Californians, north and curving inland. Some have made good neighbors. Some have been the source of our current woes.

One day I caught 3 Brown Trout in that lake, all over 3 lbs each with the biggest at 5.5lbs.

Caught all 3 on Rooster Tail spinners...

But had to hike 7.5miles to the back of the lake where the rivers and creeks enter.

No boats allowed. Ever.

It's an amazingly gorgeous place and as pristine/clean as any in the country.

IIRC the Sierra Club was founded with the goal of saving Hetch Hetchy from being dammed and flooded. That was before it became solely a playpen for leftwing kooks.

I say let’s let ‘Frisco drink seawater from the bay. Liberate Hetch Hetchy! John Muir would be proud.

Actually, it is a great ideal.

Yes, even the most bizzare of coins still has two sides. (spit!) As you know, I love the water visiting time machines with their penstocks called dams. I'm wary of Dan Lumpjaw ever since he defended the land grabbin law enforcement that killed that Scott guy down near Barbara Strisand's Ventura County ranch.

In fact, I'm leary of almost any prosecutor that runs for general elective office because they learn to think they are little gods with a smashing power over American lives on whether they decide to prosecute stuff, or not!!!

I've pretty much made up my mind that I don't like 'em and I don't trust 'em to always do the right thing. They come up through way too much power and power corrupts. Somebody once said "and absolute power corrupts absolutely!"

Anyways, I just think anybody that wants to destroy projects that can never be replaced at todays unionized "prevailing wages" is an insane A-hole!!!

There are places that are much uglier. Would anyone even consider filling the Yosemite Valley? No. It’s too pretty. There are lots of places in California to fill up that are not as pretty and still have access to water.
