Hundreds of patients have been languishing for months or even years in New York City hospitals, despite being well enough to be sent home or to nursing centers for less-expensive care, because they are illegal immigrants or lack sufficient insurance or appropriate housing.
As a result, hospitals are absorbing the bill for millions of dollars in unreimbursed expenses annually while the patients, trapped in bureaucratic limbo, are sometimes deprived of services that could be provided elsewhere at a small fraction of the cost.
Many of those individuals no longer need that care, but because they have no resources and many have no family here, we, unfortunately, are caring for them in a much more expensive setting than necessary based on their clinical need, said LaRay Brown, a senior vice president for the citys Health and Hospitals Corporation. Under state law, public hospitals are not allowed to discharge patients to shelters or to the street.

How many are illegals?
Well ... that’s what the Death Panels are for ... right? [/s]
It would be all of them.ILLEGALS NOT eligable for any government benifits which would pay for this care. (Like SSDI.....which requires having a SSN and paying taxes for...which illegals do not)
To tranfer them out to a nursing home,so to speak.
Our policy should mirror Mexico’s, what do they do when foreigners are out of the emergency room?

Good question. And I still can't get over that so many people, (here and other countries) say they hate America. They are so ignorant.
It never ends, due to the legions of hungry trial lawyers lurking about.
the story says...because they are illegal immigrants or lack sufficient insurance or appropriate housing.
The hospitals around here in Maryland don’t have any trouble tossing out legal Americans.
They could care less where you go.
It’s like the bartender that makes last call says. I don’t care where you go but you are leaving here.
NYT, the “Duty to Die” paper of record....
I saw a show about emergency room patients in LA who had no place to go after they received care. Not necessarily illegals. The hospitals had vans that took them out and dumped them on the sidewalk in the horrible neighborhoods they were presumed to have come from to continue their bum/baglady lives until their next expensive trip to the emergency room. Much of this problem stems from alcohol use. And drugs. Some conceivably from undiagnosed strokes or brain injuries.
Whatever causes the problem, the problem remains. I don't have a clue how to solve it. Do you?
probably ends sooner if you are an actual citizen
Last I read the Mexicans shoot the Guatamalan’s crossing the Southern Border into that country. I doubt they allow them into their hospitals. I understand too that most of those being smuggled by the Mexican Coyote’s (as the smugglers are called) into our country are from Guatamala as well.
Interestingly the vast majority of illegals around these parts that come through Mexico, and cross our borders illegally are actually Guatamalans, but they are refered to as Mexicans.
HHC and then mayor, Rudy Giuliani, had grand plans to sell the oceanfront property and pocket the profits. Unfortunately, they were unable to because of a provision in the City Charter and the buildings that in 1998 were in "imminent danger of falling down" still stand strong today.
Maybe HHC should consider reopening the facility.
Isn’t the proper term for these patients “UNITS”?
No, hospitals are not absorbing the bill. TAXPAYERS are.
The New York City Council is close to passing a city ordinance that will drastically hamper the activities of the Homeland Security Department’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to federal law enforcement officers and a non-profit public interest group’s latest report..
The ordinance will limit ICE agents in their role of identifying and removing illegal aliens from the city’s correctional system. If and when the ordinance is passed, New York will join a small list of large cities, including San Francisco, Washington, DC, Chicago, and San Jose, that deliberately obstruct ICE’s operations.
Even more troubling is the Obama Administration’s lack of resolve in making certain all states and cities comply with immigration laws and policies, a former New York City police official told the Law Enforcement Examiner.

As long as we continue to allow illegals to manipulate and abuse our system, we’re the ones who will continue to be screwed.
EMTALA... they get reimbursed by the Feds for emergency care.
