TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- The number of new prescription drug shortages in 2011 shot up to 267, well above the prior record and about four times the number of medication shortages in the middle of the last decade.
Figures just released by the University of Utah Drug Information Service, which tracks national drug shortages, show there were 56 more newly reported drug shortages in the U.S. last year than in 2010, when there were 211. By contrast, there were only 58 drug shortages reported in 2004.
As the drug shortages worsen, so does their impact on patient care, particularly in hospitals. The inability to get crucial medicines has disrupted chemotherapy, surgery and care for patients with infections and pain. At least 15 deaths since 2010 have been blamed on the shortages, which have set a record high in each of the last five years.
"At the beginning of the year, we were on a pace of about a shortage every day," Erin R. Fox, manager of the service, told The Associated Press. "Luckily, that pace has definitely diminished."

Besides disrupting patient care, the shortages have delayed clinical trials comparing experimental drugs to older ones and have led to unprecedented price gouging, with hospitals sometimes having to pay outrageous markups for scarce drugs.

A pharmacist friend shared with me his alarm over the shortages before Christmas. He said that it was the FDA creating the shortages with brand new regulations. He said American pharmaceutical companies were not to blame for the shortages and that he expects it to get a lot worse this year.
Just another modus operandi for culling the population.
This is totally deliberate.
Stock up on hydrogen peroxide, oil of oregano, other essential oils. Betadine, alcohol, antiseptic washes with lidocaine.
Yep, it’s the FDA setting quotas on the production of those drugs in which we’re experiencing shortages. The drug companies can manufacture only the amount they were granted permission to make.
Whether or not their actions are intentional, the results have made you exactly right.
Good idea.
You're right. It will also take a toll on the pharmaceutical companies whose profit margins are not as fat as some allege.
“.....with hospitals sometimes having to pay outrageous markups for scarce drugs.”
What your friend said, and from the article tell me this is just another way the Leftist’s are attacking the system.

Bingo. It's going to continue unless Obama is sent back to Chicago in November.
There was a couple of weeks last year when the hospital where I work damn near ran out of Morphine. They had to buy it from local pharmacies to scrape by.
How in the hell could that possibly happen? There’s no reason Morphine couldn’t be as plentiful as Tobacco. It comes from Poppy flowers.....
Our head pharmacist later told me it was the DEA’s fault, but the suppliers and .gov were pretty much pointing fingers of blame at one another.
This is what happens when you a sex crazed hillbilly as President.
That is frightening to hear, Korn. It very much appears to be the FDA’s fault but why it’s happening right now I can only guess.
Oil of oregano? What’s that for?
The elephant in the room regarding this issue which no one around here will talk about is Medicare Part D - brought to us courtesy of Dubya and a GOP controlled Congress.
KantianBurke, would you please copy and paste or even just link to the specific section in Medicare Part D which you are claiming ordered FDA to impose new restrictions and brought about these shortages?
Thanks.
Socialism = Shortages.
Do your own homework! Oil of Oregano and Barlean’s OIl Leaf Solution could save your immune system at some point.
All of these medicines are derived from natural ingredients which they are trying to eliminate with the passage of SSA 550 last year.
It’s all about money, greed, political payoffs and population control.
read naturalnews.com , it will open your eyes.
Good luck.
What Vlad said. If you think the government promising to provide “free” pills for all the old folks isn’t directly related to these shortages, you’re living in a fantasy world.
