Tennessee woman shouldn't be punished for doing right thing with gun

Free Meredith Graves!

Just about everyone in the country now knows about the Louisville, Tenn., woman who was arrested when she tried to check her gun at the 9/11 Memorial in New York City.

The nurse and medical student had driven to New York with her husband to interview for a residency at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in Long Island. While in the Big Apple, they decided to do a little sightseeing.

Graves has a Tennessee handgun carry permit and had a loaded .32-caliber Kel-Tec in her purse. When she saw the no-guns symbol at the memorial, she asked a guard where to check her weapon and abruptly found herself under arrest and facing a 3½-year minimum sentence for violating New York's strict gun laws.

"She was being honest," Graves' mother-in-law, who lives in New Jersey, protested to the New York Post. "Everyone down there carries, and she just forgot."

The incident reinforces an array of silly stereotypes.

Graves, an educated professional, is cast in the role of an aw-shucking, dunderheaded hillbilly, down from the hollers where the folks all pack heat.

New York City, America's hometown during the Twin Towers tragedy, presents itself as an effete enclave where rampant fear and liberalism have gnawed to death all signs of common sense.

The risks are real, though.

I don’t live in either place, but I think I’d be much more likely to carry a gun in NYC than in TN.

She is toast. Ask Plaxico Burress. He caught the game winning touchdown in the SUPERBOWL for the Giants in 2007. They still made him do two years!

In terms of the Second Amendment, Winston’s Churchill’s “Iron Curtain” speech is applicable to the NJ/NY border. One needs to be extremely careful in such states when possessing firearms.

I hate to say it, but I’ll bet they convict her. NY & NYC are fixated on gun control tyranny. Only a credible threat of a national boycott MIGHT save this lady. Not likely to happen with everything else going on.

In 2010, a man with a concealed-carry permit from Florida was pulled over in New York after making a right turn on red — also illegal there — and was arrested when police found a 9mm pistol in his glove box.

Under what reason did the Stazi have to search his vehicle for a simple traffic failure?

If you are a CCW license holder, it’s up to you to check the laws of the states you are traveling through.

Does this woman live under a rock? Everybody knows NYC is crazy when it comes to firearms.

This was a nurse, and a medical school graduate, that is to say an MD— who was applying for her residency at Brookhaven in NYC. They probably have that wrong— med grads are lotteried to their residencies, so she was checking in with them (maybe applying for the living quarters or whatever).

She, thinking this is a reasonable place (NYC? no way!) and seeing a sign (and clearly not knowing the local laws anyway) presents herself to an officer. Now any REAL criminal would never do this.... but they prosecute her anyway. There is a legal defense fund started for her in Knoxville.

And one BLATANT thing.... WHY was is necessary to have a sign saying NO GUNS allowed, in a city where it is against the law already? Just for whom is that sign?

She's no "victim". How [stupid or uninformed] do you have to be to NOT know about NYC gun laws for one AND how tight security would be at an event like this?

A pistol: because I can’t carry a policeman in my pocket.

The Big Apple would be better off if it really were “wild West.” After a spate of self defense shootings, thugs and robbers would begin to look elsewhere.

In this case it looks like her medical assignment was her first foray out of the hills. If the 2nd amendment were actually functional, there would be no B.S. like this.

IMO, Plaxico is a little bit different situation. Used his money and influence to pull more crap.

But I’m sure you are right. She is toast. And I can appreciate AMERICANS wanting to visit the site of 9-11. In fact, AMERICANS SHOULD visit the place—fully armed. Shoot their guns in the air and scream their defiance to the world.

She's just a young woman.

There are lots of people who imagine that New York has gotten in line with the rest of the country. They are mistaken of course but that's what they believe.

I'm looking forward to the day Bloomberg forgets he's no longer the mayor and that he can't carry a piece.

I have a carry permit and living in Virginia...Irony is that here in Fauquier County the chances of me needing a weapon are very slim and in VA you don’t even need a permit to carry concealed in your vehicle (the way it should be everywhere).
In the places you really need it, WashDC, NY, NJ, Baltimore etc my permit is useless but I still go by the judged by 12 rather than carried by 6 theory.

One just needs to stay out of those states. I know I do.

Doesn’t she know??? It’s against the law in NYC to defend yourself against killers, robbers and rapists by using your 2nd Amendment Constitutional right that clearly states “Shall not be infringed” that liberal politicians constantly swear to protect and defend when they take their oath of office. You have to allow the criminals to kill you or rob you otherwise you can get into a lot of trouble by people who can afford 24 hour armed bodyguards. Just ask Bernhard Goetz who shot 4 punks who tried to rob him in the 1980s. Not only did Goetz do time in jail, he also got sued and owes $43 million to one of the muggers to this day. Yes that;s right, $43 MILLION.
