DES MOINES, Iowa Looking past Iowa, Mitt Romney defended his conservative credentials Tuesday as he anticipated escalated attacks in New Hampshire and beyond from his rivals for the Republican presidential nomination.
Perhaps people forget that I ran for president four years ago, you may recall that along with Mike Huckabee I was the conservative alternative to John McCain, Romney said on Fox News Channel. He was responding to rival Newt Gingrich, who had accused Romney of lying about his moderate record. Romney said Gingrich, who has fallen in polls in the face of negative attack ads by Romneys allies, was apparently angry.
Ive got a record, and its a conservative record, Romney said.
Romney has spent most of the nearly four years since he dropped out of the 2008 race trying to win over a skeptical GOP base. Hes had trouble with the partys right wing, which so far has jumped from candidate to candidate as it searches for a conservative alternative to the former Massachusetts governor.
Romney said he is anticipating stepped up criticism from the Republican field in the wake of the leadoff Iowa caucuses Tuesday night.

We don't need a president to FIX things.
We need a president who will work to get government OUT OF THE WAY!

Let me be clear...I’m not saying I support Romney, but Rush Limbaugh clearly was backing him in the final week(s) of the republican primaries that went to John McCain.
Rush said he did it because compared to Juan McCain he is conservative. I remember him passionately telling people to vote for Romney. So even if Romney does win at least (according to Rush) he won’t be as bad as McCain. Possibly a lessor of two evils deal, but Rush was pretty passionate about saying Romney was the true conservative.
Logic would tell us that we need a BETTER candidate than McCain...not someone who lost to him.
Romulus is no conservative. Period.

Yeah, and I was Mr. Universe four years ago! [snort]
Mitt Romney may be a bit more conservative than John McCain, but that does NOT mean he is a conservative.
I mean, just because Rosie O’Donnell weighs less than Roseanne Barr, it doesn’t mean Rosie O’Donnell is thin.

Mitt, you are to funny. A conservative? Bwahahahahahahahahahaha, hehehehe, snort, snort, snicker, snicker, hahahahahahaha. What a joke that is Mitt. Snort, snort, snicker, snicker.

Here's what Limbaugh said in February 08. I think now, based on the way the campaign has shaken out, that there probably is a candidate on our side who does embody all three legs of the conservative stool, and thats Romney, Rush Limbaugh told his huge audience. The three legs of the stool are national security/foreign policy, the social conservatives, and the fiscal conservatives.
Laura Ingraham introduced Romney at CPAC as a true conservative and a conservatives conservative.
Can someone name a major issue Romeny moved to the center on in the last four years? That's why I get mental whiplash when I listen to the jawbone media.
I remember putting on a gas mask and voting for Romney over McCain and Huck in 2008.
I also remember being sickened by the experience.
who is getting zotted?
I didn’t vote for Romney then and I sure as hell won’t vote for him now...EVER.
I know too much about him and his ilk.
Yeah, Romney was the conservative alternative to McCain, and since McCain is a liberal, that’s not saying much.
Ugh. What a depressing reminder. Flip Flop Romney and Nanny Huckabee as the "conservatives" in 2008. Just shoot me now.
Hopefully the results for these primaries alone will convince the establishment that Mitt is out.
January 3, 2012 Iowa (caucus)
January 10, 2012 New Hampshire (primary)
January 21, 2012 South Carolina (primary)
January 31, 2012 Florida (primary)
February 4, 2012 Nevada (caucus)
February 411, 2012 Maine (caucus)
February 7, 2012 Colorado (caucus)
Minnesota (caucus)
Missouri (primary)
I’d see NH and Maine as the only ones where he’ll do ok.
Other than that, hopefully Republicans can dispense with the idea of him running by February.
After that, if he hangs in anyway, with any luck he’ll do terrible in March.
The grassroots has to do the right thing and vote for “someone else”, IMHO.
