California Raises Booster Seat Age To 8

California, which has more drivers than any other state, has raised its cutoff age for car seats to 8.

The new law took effect Sunday, with stiff fines for parents who don't comply.

Children must be buckled into booster seats in vehicles until they turn 8 or grow to a height of 4-foot-9, under SB929 by Sen. Noreen Evans, D-Santa Rosa.

That's two more years than under the previous law, which required the restraints until children turned 6 or reached 60 pounds.

Eventually adults will have to ride in booster/car seats.

I wonder which booster seat manufacturers supported this when it was a bill and how much $$$$ they contributed to politicians?

Take it from personal experience, Kaliforia, if you think you're going to put an 8 year old child in a kiddy seat by legislative fiat, you'll see more real-time traffic incidents than you'll ever hope to see revenue from primary code offenses. You social engineers would take a bullet in the head and get kicked back into a flaming trench before you'll admit you're even the slightest bit off-base, wouldn't you? Such as it is.

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

I propose a law that all lawmakers must wear straight jackets while in session.

I grew up with no seatbelts and no booster seats

When I was a kid our car had no seat belts and the friggin dash came to a point and was made of painted sheet metal! There you sat, just staring at that instrument of death :-)

The first car we got that actually had seat belts the first thing my dad did was cut them off since they were just always in the way.

I remember that on vacation I would curl up and sleep on the rear dash board (those old Buicks were HUGE)...lol I wonder how far you could drive like that now before getting ticketed.

Surprised they didn’t lower the age of consent to 8 at the same time...

Yeah, but the new law SB942, if implemented, will include all children under 4’11” tall, to use children’s booster seats, while the vehicle is being operated.

Other laws being considered are the use of bicycle type helmets for CA licensed permit holders, and all those within their first 18 months of driving.

I didn’t weigh 60# until I was in 6th grade.Yikes it would be embarrassing to have to stay in a seat that long!

I think there will be a challenge to this idiot law. I don’t believe they have the data to back up whether this improves safety at all.

I think you must be right about car seat manufacturers pushing this law.

My kids are long since grown, but how in the heck does one carpool kindergarteners, and first through third graders to school, take a carload of kids on a school field trip, or pick up the neighborhood kids from baseball or soccer practice? It would make it very inconvenient to even pick up your child and his/her friend from school.

Were traffic deaths from this age group especially high? The two children I knew who were killed in traffic accidents were in car seats at the time.
